The Trustees have pleasure in presenting their report and their independently examined financial statements of the charity for the year ending December 31[st] 2021.

The Association’s formal constitution was adopted at a public meeting convened at Mickleton Church Institute on 13[th] May 1992. Charitable status was sought and this was conferred on the Association on 29/7/ 1992 Number 1011422.

At the 1994 Annual General Meeting the constitution was amended to enable various groups to become sections of MVHA with representatives on the management committee, further minor changes were made in 2015 and last year to clause13d which now reads, ‘The holding trustees and members of the Management Committee of the Association shall be entitled to be indemnified out of the property of the Association for any liability properly incurred severally and jointly by them on behalf of the Association for the avoidance of doubt the liability of Trustees is limited to the assets of the Association at any time.’

The Association was issued a Premises Licence PL(A)0031 (Licensing Act 2003) by Durham County Council.

Organisations affiliated to the MVHA during the year were: Teesdale Village Halls Consortium, Durham County Council, Mickleton Parish Council, the Parochial Church Council and The Association of Teesdale Day Clubs.

The main objective of the Association is to promote for the benefit of the inhabitants of the parishes of Mickleton, Lunedale, Holwick and Kelton without distinction of sex or of political religious or other opinions, by associating with local authorities, voluntary organisations and the inhabitants, in a common effort to provide facilities in the interests of social welfare for recreation and leisure-time occupation, to advance education with the object of improving the conditions of life for the said inhabitants. Additionally to acquire such land as necessary, vested in the name of the Holding Trustees, and to provide a Village Hall and to manage and maintain such buildings and land so acquired and to raise and hold money in furtherance of the above objectives.

In 2007 the hall registered with the Inland Revenue to be able to claim Gift Aid. HMRC. No. XN87766.

The Management Committee have the following policies: Financial Policy, Hygiene Policy, Health & Safety Policy, Child Protection Policy, Vulnerable Adult Policy, Data Protection Policy (GDPR)

All deeds and leases are held in safe keeping by the Association’s solicitors.

David Philbrick & John Carrington have both agreed to be holding trustees. Proposed by David Hutchinson & seconded by Sue Brown, this was agreed at our April 2021 management meeting. Our solicitor has suggested a slight amendment clause to 13(d) of the constitution adding:- “For the avoidance of doubt the liability of the Trustees is limited to the assets of the Association at any time” Proposed by David Hutchinson and seconded by Sue Brown and all agreed.

The Association is run by a management committee of four elected officers and at least six elected committee members together with a representative from each of the Sections, (all sections are covered by the hall’s insurance), and affiliated organisations as may be agreed under the constitution.

Mickleton Village Hall is well known both locally and further afield as an excellent venue for meetings and private parties through word of mouth and the Hall’s web site www.thevillagehalls.co.uk/the-halls/mickleton-village-halls/

Volunteers 2021 Activities

The Management Committee have normally met on the first Monday of every month at 7.30pm. Due to Covid-19 restrictions we had no meetings until April. Because of other commitments it was agreed at our meeting on August 2[nd] 2021 to have our monthly meetings on a Thursday @ 7.30pm.

A check of all safety systems is done every month and the results recorded. Any problems found are sorted ASAP.

The solar panels, installed in August 2011 raised £1816.87 in 2021 these funds go towards the hall’s running costs and maintenance.

The public toilet facilities were installed in the storage building in time for the drama event which was held outside in the field in July. We had hoped to get grant funding for this project, but it was decided to finish the toilet facilities with our own funds.

The area under the stage was to be fitted out as a changing room for stage productions, now that all the equipment etc. has been moved to the new storage building.

The Village Field next to the hall is the venue for the popular Summer Carnival normally held on the first Saturday in June, the carnival was sadly again cancelled this year due to Covid restrictions, we did have on the field, a drama event “The Complete works of Shakespeare” by Castle Players, on July 9[th] , the audience were asked to bring their own refreshments, the event was well supported.

We had two live music evenings with Albert Lee in September and Voodoo Room in October, both of these events had limited audience numbers due to Covid, both bands were rebooked for 2022.

We had a restrictive audience for a Highlights production in June with “Old Herbaceous”. Mickleton Perform bought us a further Highlights production in November with comic “George Egg” both events were well received.

Mickleton Parish Council asked if two thousand mini daffodils could be planted in The Village Field if they won TAP’s competition for the bulbs, Mickleton Parish won by getting the most “Likes” on Facebook. It was decided to hold a “Coffee Morning” and to invite the community to plant the bulbs in the field. This was a very enjoyable event and it was really nice to see so many people supporting the planting of the bulbs. This event ended up with the formation of a new group called Mickleton Community Events (MiCE).

We have created an online calendar so that all the Trustees could have access to hall booking dates for them to know when the hall was available. The Chairman and the Booking Clerk to control the data recorded.

The Hall Committee aims to continue to provide support to the various groups and sections using the Hall by the provision of a well maintained and useful facility which is warm and welcoming for all users and an asset to the community.

The Committee would like to thank all the many volunteers who have helped in any way over the past year. The Committee is also grateful to Carolyn Foster, Sally Stephenson and Colin Hutchinson for keeping the premises, grounds and field looking immaculate.

Management Trustees Responsibility for the Financial Statements

Charity Commission rules require the Trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year which give a true and fair view of the financial activities of the Association during the year and of its financial position at the end of the year. In preparing those financial statements, the Trustees are required to:

Note: As a result of the Coronavirus pandemic the Hall was closed until July when we began to re-open. We benefitted from the Governments support grants which has meant a positive impact on the Hall’s finances since expenditure has been reduced whilst closed. However, once re-opened the Hall has seen a return to near normal income and expenditure levels.

Highlights:

SECTION REPORTS

The Village Halls Consortium

The Directors of The Village Halls Consortium are grateful to Mickleton VH for allowing the Consortium to continue using the upstairs space for meetings and office equipment. In 2021 we had no meetings in the office, the Hall committee did not charge any hire costs. The Hall Committee’s generosity and understanding is much appreciated.

Mickleton Lunch Club

On Thursday lunch time, while the hall was closed, the lunch club staff used the hall’s kitchen to prepare a weekly takeaway lunch, delivered by volunteers to members during Covid 19 lock down. The club opened on July 8[th] to all club members, it was lovely to catch up with everybody’s news.

Cinema Club

Due to Covid restrictions we started showing films again in August with ‘The Windermere Children’.

We’ve then shown two films on the first and third Friday evenings for the rest of the year.

Numbers for the films have been lower than before the pandemic, we hope they will pick back up in due time.

A regular brochure is sent to members listing films we intend showing in the four months ahead, this also includes a list of other future events planned in the hall.

The cinema facilities are available for use at meetings and parties.

Mickleton LIVE (R’n’B) Club

We have had 2 events, ‘Albert Lee’ on the 11[th] Sept and ‘Voodoo Room’ on the 23[rd] Oct. It was great to have music back in the village hall, there was a real buzz in the room, and it was nice to catch up with our guests.

The club attracts high quality national and international groups who regularly return to perform at Mickleton Village Hall.

Mickleton Gardening Club

The Gardening Club activities continued to be disrupted though 2021 due to the COVID19 pandemic but it has gradually got back into its stride and at the time of writing, meets regularly on the second Tuesday of each month at 7:30pm. Some of the highlights from 2021 follow.

In August members of the club travelled to visit the gardens at Harlow Carr. The weather was good to us and we had a lovely day touring the gardens, eating at Betty’s Tea Room and returning with plants from the shop.

We played host to John O’Reilly who gave an illustrated talk 'Dr Margaret Bradshaw's Teesdale Special Flora project' . There was much interest and several questions. We also held slide shows, prepared by members of the Club.

We held our ever-popular sunflower and potato growing competitions, and awarded trophies for outstanding gardens.

Again, we had beautiful weather for the open gardens and also our annual garden party, where members contributed to the picnic whilst sitting in the garden of our very generous host, Paul Hunter, and admired the view.

The annual show was held in September, with many vegetable, flower and produce entries available for judging and inspection by club members and the general public.

Mickleton Gardening Club welcomes new members. Please contact the new chair of the club, Martin Ingall (martin.ingall@sebringsprite.com or 01833 640980). Martin was elected in 2022 following the retiral of Audrey Townsend, the previous chair, after many years of hard work in the role.

PerformMickleton

Perform Mickleton section was set up in 2018, to bring more live performances, especially theatre, to Mickleton Village Hall. We work in association with Highlights Rural Touring, who select top-class acts from around the world, to come and perform in rural village halls across the north of England. In addition, we are very happy to host other performing groups, such as The Castle Players, in line with our aims. We are currently preparing for our 14[th] show.

Following the Covid19 Pandemic, we began our 2021 season with a workshop delivered by The Cabinet of Curiosity Studio . We created origami lampshades as we explored this ancient Japanese paper craft.

In June, we hosted Peter Macqueen from PMac Productions , with his show Old Herbaceous . This show was hugely popular, and combined story-telling, with gardening live on stage.

In July, we were thrilled to be picked as one of only 3 venues for The Castle Players’ outdoor performance of The Complete Works of Shakespeare (Abridged) . The weather was kind, and an audience of more than 100 picniced in the field before enjoying the performance, with the backdrop of the Teesdale hills.

Our season ended with a performance of Movable Feast by the chef-comedian George Egg. He created a three-course meal using items more usually at home in planes, trains and automobiles.

Performers tell us how much they enjoy the warm welcome and facilities offered by Mickleton Village Hall, and audience members enjoy the range of performances on offer. MiCE - Mickleton Community Events : a new section formed in 2021 Over 40 people turned out on Saturday 16[th] October to help plant the 1100 daffodil bulbs, we 'won' in the Teesdale Action Partnership competition, all enjoying free refreshments in the hall afterwards. We decided to form this new village hall section to build on the community spirit really evident in Mickleton during Coved, lockdown and the Big Bulb Plant. The fruits of their labour have been much admired for the first time over the last few weeks of March 2022.

A small group of bakers, thinkers and doers then put their heads together – and MiCE was born. We next planned a Christmas Coffee Morning, again with free refreshments, to encourage villagers to meet together in the hall decorated in truly magical festive spirit. A Christmas tree festival was inaugurated and 12 were duly on display for the last 2 weeks of December, much admired by all hall users. We hope to make this an annual event, and already have 23 donated trees stored in readiness for 2022. Funds were raised through donations, a raffle and manning a book/CD stall. Surplus cakes were taken to villagers unable to leave their homes or attend the event. Barbara Wilson approached Lord Strathmore to obtain a beautiful outdoor tree for the top of the car park, something we have not seen in Mickleton for many years.

MiCE Christmas Coffee Morning - Saturday 18[th] December 2021

We now have a very gifted bunch of 15 MiCE members all willing to give up their time to advertise, print, bake, sew, organise raffles and children's activities, decorate the hall, brew cups of tea, wash up etc. We are keen to organise more events for Mickletonians to look forward to. Just let us know what you would like us to put on! We plan to hold 4 or 5 events in 2022. Our next event is a Curry and Quiz fundraising night on February 2[nd ] followed by a themed Easter coffee morning.
