The planning of our activities is done with regard to the Charlty Commission s get￿ra1 guidarKe on public
beneft. We aim to perform as a cholr to the highest level L* our ability, In c*der that our audien￿ tenefits
from experienoNJ high quality muslG This often requires the aydrtlon of soloists and orchestras for the fijll
perf0rrnan￿ of the music, and this costs monw. We attempt to balance quality and affordability at Èwery
performano. This Is often a challenge.
Th￿re was a to this finanoal year - after Sprlng concert, the idea was to propel Daventry Choral
lety forward with a host of new experiences, whilst being mindfvl that th& variety shujld tr￿n be followed
by a year of familiarity. Our proieLtM)ns for this th￿? year pattem was that the first (2023-2024) would ha
considerable expenses (orchestras, solc4sts etc.) and the second year w0￿d not . thLs ￿11 show In the
firkincial year's accounts.
This firwncial year commenced with a Sprlng o)ncert - Haydn's Creatlon. We had hosted a successful
worksh)p ¢)n the same work a few weeks ph)r to the day itself, and It was dear that this enabled the
performano to be superbly polished. The￿ 6 no doubt that Laura Bailie has Impro¥Ed the m￿lca￿ty of c¥Jr
perfonnances over the last few years and this was dernonstrated by the Calib￿ of g)lotsts we ￿rnered for
this cor£etL The icing on the cake was a very full house -an absdutely mar¥ek)us turn out with a
consderable amcAJrt (* feedba(k saylng thts was the best rendrtl*Jn of the Creati)n many had ever WIt￿&Sed.

go abroad onty to lower costs, Ixrt also to make the expeditk)n completely accessible to erferycffie. DCS is
a ctkifity keen an beiro Induslve In every way. We a￿ very aware of the mental health benefts wr ttKxr
prOv￿eS along wth the health aspect of the act of slnging ltsdf, as well as the sense of purpose and
belongirvj rt provides within Its communlty. The four day tour t(x)k F4ace In sunny Chlchester W￿re there
were a few firstsl Unteknownst to the whcle cholr, prlor permIsslc￿ had been obtsined from a seivtQ station
to stage a fiashmb in thelr foyer; It proved to ojr SInge￿ that thevre great even with only five rn'nutes.

followed by a Ferformano at a dedicated cOn￿rt ven￿, Graylingwell Chapel ar%1 finally our flrst tirr* singing
outdoors at a Nats'onal Trust property, Uppark Holse. The intentlon was to pThide something for all Ujr
sirKJers - three completely different venues and an array of experlences. The so(ial and pastoral aspect of the
tour held Just as much Importan￿ as ￿ muslc; this was a tlme for members to sperKI time tcxjether,
enabiifVJ frlendships to grow al(mg wlth the feeling of belonging wthln the cholr. The feedback the Tour
Committee r￿ed from ￿r tcurists was Just super and we were grateful to hear 5t.

It sholdd be Th)ted that the twr was originally d￿lse(l prior to ￿ld-19 arKI a p￿e w memlEr had been
gNen to ￿ ch(xr. Of cour*. the tour was put on hold during the par#Jernic, txrt rLynstated, tr
Committ￿ fourKI costs had risen sgnificantty (as indeed they had across the woHd). The trustees keen
to horKrtJr (Njr members V¥ith the original alfvertised (x)st of the trip as m￿h as [X￿1￿ so whlst a smai
prO￿rtIon of this increase was passed onto each tour member, the trustees v<*ed to subsidise the rernaning
cost increase with DCS funds. We were aware that this depleted (yjr reserves 50rnewha¢ txjt the trustees
were also dear that this was a unique situab'on directly related to the globa aftershcKk5 of tr* panderrK aThJ
this series of unfortunate events within our society were unlikety to mr again. It is Important to recall, the
reason l organisej tr* first auctlon of promises was s￿ifiCallY to pr(vlde fvrKls to subsidise the tour.
Midsummer was s4x)n u￿n us and Thjr next new eXperIen￿ proved a rrighty SUCLess. Ffy first time DCS
gave a 0)n￿rt on a Sunday aftemoon (rather than Saturday evening) and in dIffe￿rt Ven￿ to 1K)rn￿l - the
Daventry C￿￿munity Centre. Keen to expand our breath rf audien￿ and enhan￿ CAJr incLYne, we fdt this
setting and a rnore lightweight, varied muslc th01￿ might be the arswer. It was a farly casua affrdir with the
chcmr performing whilst the audien￿ sat at fully deC￿ted tsbles, being waited on with an array d cakes ar#J
tea - our FOH team were utterly 9Jperb, this couldnt have been done witP#)ut them. afterrKX)n was most
ctrssful ¥Mth many FX)sitsve ￿leWS, all seats were fvll, with some of the audience ha¥iThJ to stand. ar
profrt made. We were deF￿hted with the outcorre.
As the Summer break ccYnmen(Ed, work on the rtw website tegan. As the grateful recipients of a grant frLYll
the Councillor Covid SupFKJrt FurMI from WNDC, ttrEse funds (£1500) c(Y4ered ts maixity d the cost of the
website enabling it to be profession*ly I￿lIt. We sp*nt the Summer meetirKJ With a recomrrended k)cal
o)mpanyi
designingi wrlting copy, ed'tting (and edrting!), with tweaks taking pla￿ in the Autumn temi, After
mLKh researth, a suitable online ticketing platrorm was chosen, which completed the projert. onh.￿ tkkets
went live Just a few days ttfore the Chr15tmas coKert, 9) we ￿11 not have a full FICtU￿ rf Its effKacy until
next finanaal year.
DCS trustees are aware that the outgoirw have I￿reaSed s)mewhat In recent times so we
discussing new ways of creating Income to redu￿ tt* shortfall. We are keen Th)t to pass on rtsing costs to
our member5 as ralsing our subs signrficanty wculd not be in line with the ethos of our d￿)ir arKI making
music ￿￿SIble to all. New fundraising and inc(xne strategies have al￿dY been imFAery*nted, txjt fall into
the next finanoal year, these will be mentioned in the 2024-2025 report. Our year-round fvr￿ra1slng
continues with the weew Bring and Buy sale, CLffee contributions 100 dub, Frlents. subscript'ons,
Christmas cake raffle, Chorale engagements ar￿ one off fu￿1raIserS like our ScKlal Evenirwj.
This NcNember, the theme for the social gat￿ring was A N￿ht at the Movle5; IncI￿ling SUPPVI t￿ cabaret
event ran hand in harKI with an AuctDn of Promises - It was an evening of music, fun, frolics fvrKJraisirwJ
which was hugely enpyed by all. Our other maiy fundraiser (£500) was ￿ engagerrEnt ￿fjth Fa￿￿eY Hall
hotel, where the DCS Cl)orale sang for hotd g￿StS C￿ Christmas e￿. This was a re￿r#jing success aTrl
that very same erfening, we seajred the gig for Chrlstmas 20241
Handel's Messiah was the Chol￿ for this yearfs Christrnas ts)n￿rt at our home, HO￿ Crtss Chjrth. Using a
redu￿ orchestration, the choir and ￿l01sts We￿ acc(xnpanied by Adrlan Moore on the harpsthord alorrfj
with soloists (tr￿0 of four were very last minute subs due to Illness), and famlliar G(xliva Ensemble
with whom we have ueated a ￿Per vKrklng relatlonskmp. A popdar Chr&tmas cOn￿rt to attend, the ￿use
was COmp￿telY full to ￿rSt1r￿j, with one and all dellghted by professlonal sour￿. Laura ono again, led
the ctrK)ir to success.
The￿ was one final first to ac£omplish for this pertod, which was to make video recording for the new
website. The ￿1r spent a Saturday afterno)n filming m￿tiple takes for a kxDfessional videojraptsr. As the
choir moves whdly into its ￿￿pter of full online preserKe, it Is absdutely key that we have something to
which the public can refer if they would like to hear Daventry Choral Soclety sing. After all - are our Thyn
best advertisement. It was a fun afternoon and we await the results.

Auoss this year we have welcomed ten new members, allcrated two students the Your¥J Person's Ch)ra
Award and granted c￿e bursaryi we are glad to be able to encourage rEw singers in any way we can. The
firk3naal year closed with DCS deep In rehearsal for the Verdi Requiem, In ct)Naboration with the Ncrthampton
8)ch c￿1r arnl Royal Philharmonic Orchestra with performano due to tske place at the Rtyal ar
Theatre, Northampton. The next report will reflett u[rf￿ this con￿rt.

These neby initiatives naturally, required a de￿nt am¢xJnt crf funding, but the trustees and l ajree that these
measures were ne&4ed In order f<x the sodety to nThie f(Thiardi growth requires change. The investment

devising new inccme strategies.
As we approach the AGM l am glad to refiect that It Is clear the cholr goes from strength to Stren¢h uThler

aspects of keeping a charity afloaL We are fortunate to have an extremely committed trustee group, w
undouttedty put first the best Interests of ￿)dety. Tr* full committee provldes stalwart supp)rt in the
daily runniw ￿ the cholr and varlous 5w&committees, Induding the tour cor£ert planning are
completely vitsl to keeFMng things running ynoothly. Equalty important are our volunteers for everything from
organising coffee rota, to wtting up the podium each wee< or hooverSng up after concerts - this scKiety

Tour

One person received a Bursary this year. We are alw•s glad to make thb award, whlch Is part of the 9xietyls
ethos to support those who might not otherwise be able to access Music or the commur#ty ft pro¥￿e$.
Bursary Rstricted Fund remains unchanged at £275.
