Purpose and aims
Nats'onal Eczema Society was established in 1975 to support people with eczema and their families and
lo work on their behalf. We remain deduted to these founding prinCip￿S and t¢)Jay we continue to help
J>eople across the UK by provK4ing evidenc&ba5ed infomiation and adviee about e¢zema and rt5
managernent. We deliverthis in various ways through ourwebsrte, webinars. inslruclional V￿e0$, social
media Commun￿atsOns, putrAicalxJns and nurse4upported Helpline. We abo proV￿e a colleclNe voice
for people with eczema. to infom) research and inffluence health poly to wnprove euema Care, and
raise 9￿018r awareness and Ur￿er$￿AdYQ ofthe ¢ondition pe￿Ie affected by e¢zema and the
wider public.
The prevalence ofe¢zema has irweased over recent decades. and around one in fve Children and one
in len aduEts are now impacted by this lrfe-challenging condrtion in the UK. IhThile the reasons for the
increase are not fully understc(#J. it d¢es mean the charity's work Is needed more than ever. There is
as yet no ¢ure for e¢zema and. unless you have the ¢ondrti)n. it carh be hard to imagine the daily
challenge of living wlh relentle55 itching and inflamed. painful skrn. Many healthcare professionals have
limited defmatolc4Jy training and timety access lo specialist dermatology heatthcare for people with
eczema can often be drficuir. National Eczema Society aims to provide the inlormalftjn and support
needed for people to self-manage their e¢zema effe¢tivety, to become experts in their own care. leam
from Ihe experiences of others. and proV￿e the ￿$Surance of kn￿￿rrfJ they are nol on Iheir own.
Ensuring our work delivers t>ur charitable aims
We review our activities each year and monitof the impact of our work to ensure we continue to fulfil
our purpose of supporting people aff&ted by e¢zema. Among other ways, we assess the Society's
performance and achvevemen15 through the number of people we have help&J wth infom)alion and
adwce, and the qualrty and consistency of the ￿￿)UrceS we provide.
We consider how planned activ￿.eS conlribute to the aims and Obl￿t￿e5 we have se( and in doing
this we have referred to the Charty Commission's general guidance on public benefit. We have had
regard lo the legrslatwe and regulatory reqUire￿￿nIS for disck)siThJ how our charitable objectives have
provided such benefrt. and complied with the duty set out in section 4 of the Charities Act 2011.

Delivering information and advic• for people living with eczerna
The Swiety ¢(￿tInueS to Pffj￿de a w￿e range of hb3h quafty. evNJenc&ba5ed informalh?n and advice
about eczema and its management for people Ibviry With the condition and their families.
Our eczema Helpline provides personalised independent advL¢e and reassurance needed by people
struggling lo ￿pe wrth eczema wherever they Ibve in the UK. We receive around 1.500 telephone, ema
and message enquiries a year from Pa￿nts of children with eczema and adults liTrthng with the condth'on.
These ¢overa wide range ofquestions about eczema syrnplcffi5 arHI treatrnents, from the latest biolog
drugs lo eczema-friendly clothing. We offer a demialology nurse calkback semce for people who have
more complex enquiries. and around 40QA of Callers are helped by one of our experienced dermatol¢)yy
nurse advisers. Our Helpline 15 available free of charge to anyone affected by ￿zerna in the UK who
needs our support.
Alongside our He￿line, the produces a WKle range of patient infomalion book￿15 and
factsheels about eczema management and treatment. availab￿ online and in print. We distribute
printed copies al events the charty organises and attends, and we provkled over 14,000 copies of our
printed publications lo heafihcare professionals during the year. for ¢)nward distribLttion to patients in
hospital demiatology Clinics and other healthcare settings.
National Eczema Society faclsheets and booklets are updated regulady on a rdling review cycle and
checked by healthcare prolessionals to ensure the information is accurate and u￿to￿late. We updated
and reprinted a number of publrcations over the year. induding our Contact Dermatitis b￿klet and
Gu*Je for Teenagers Living wtth Eczema.
We continue to raise awa￿ne$S of local vdunteer4ed patient support groups, by providing infom)alK)n
and a presence for these gTOUPS on the Society's websrte. Wrth the lifting of Covid restrictions. the Wesl
Surrey and NOrth￿aSt Harnpshire Support Group was able lo retum to k)cal fundraising and
swareness-raising. Dr George Moncrieff gave an excellent Ihoughl-provoking talk on the causes of
eczema and latest thinking on eczema care at the GroLrp'$ eczema Trnformation day in Guildford in
March. It shtraed much is sb"Il not known about eczema, but also h¢)w much pfogiess has been
made in management and tTealment appro¥hes over recent years. GTOUP member Vicky Robinson
received the Mayorfs Award fof Servrce to the Communty in June. wh￿h recognises positNe community
working within the brKough of Guildf¢xd. The award was ri¢hty Oeserved and reflects Vicky's fantastic
wort( for the Society over many years, and that of the Wesl Surrey and NortfvEast Hampshire Group.
We publish all our eczema infonnalion on the Scrtiety's website. wh￿h receive(l over ￿ million visits
during the year. with webpages on emdlients. topical sleroKI treatments, eye and ear eczema, hand
eczema, pompholyx eczema and scalp eczema especial￿ p¢)pular. We also promote heatth advice
messages through our social media ¢hannels. medKa engagement and other exlernal communicat￿n$.
We ¢ontsnued our programme of webinars. working in partnership wrth St John'5 DermAcademy (part
of Guy's and Sl Thomas, Hospital. London} tojointty deliver kn events, one focusing on new treatments
for eczema and the other about managing ¢hildhcM)d eczema. Our Q4vn webinar in Septemberon topical
steroid treatments for eczerna was well attended and thanks are due to Dr Paula Beattie for presenting
this. Recordings of several past webinars a￿ avalable to on the Society's social media pages.
Our planned work to develop an online forum to prowde peer support for people affected by eczema,
and seoping a WhalsApp channel and an instant mossaging on the Sc¢iety's helpline. webstte for
advice enquiries, were not taken forward because of competiig pressure on charity ￿SoUrCes.

NES membetship scheme
National Eczema Society is a membership organisation and we are very 9ralelul to our 2,200 members
who support the Society thrtyjgh their annual membership fee and additional donations. Memb&rs
receive our membership magazine Exchange. features expert infomiation and news about
eczema. Members are 8150 encouraged to attend the Society's Annual General Meeting and ¢onlribule
their ideas on the running of the charrty. As in previous years. support for ourcharity extends far beyond
our membership and we remain grateful to all our donors. and to those members who conbnue to
support us fiAanualty even thou9h they no b)nger have any personal need of our help.
In￿me frorn the memberth"p ￿herne has f￿len as the number of members has gr•Jually declined
over the years. We took the drfftcult decisKJn lo ￿ve to producing h¥0 issues of Exchange magazine
in 2024. rather than the Cur￿n1 quartedy schedule. $0 that costs are better algned with membershtp
income.
Reprèsenting patient ¥iOW5
As a national patient organisalion for people with eczema. the SOc￿ty plays a kading rde in providing
colledive voice to champion the needs of those affe¢ted by the wndrtion. We seek lo improve health
outcomes for people wilh eczema by influencing healih polry and part￿ipatIng in groups like the
Demiatotogy Council for England and wothing with professional bodies Id(e the Briti$h Asso¢Btion of
Dermalotogists IBADI a￿1 Pr#nary Care Demi*okngy Sctiety (PCDS). As a member of the steeriAg
group, we contribthed to the rnaior NHS England Dem￿t01c¥JY Outpatient Transfomattm Programme,
which developed a range of guNJance to help dermatology healthcare prwders meet the
challenges of responding lo seNcefunding pre5SUTes and the disruption caused by Covid. This covered
areas like teledern￿to1ogY and waiting ￿SIs. We also ¢ontbnue to work to raise awareness ol the need
for better understanding and representatKyn in demwtob)gy fc* people skin of colour.
Patient interest and awareness of the %de effeds of tc)pieal steroid medication, and concems about
topical steroid withdrawal (TSW). continues 10 9f04V. NES remains actwe in th￿ area. building on our
earlier work with the Brrtish Association of Derrnat￿og1stS to develop a p05rth￿ 5ts1ement on TSW, and
our contribution to the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency IMHRAI review oftopical
Steroid withdrawal reactions. Topul steroid vAthdwrnl is complex and fesearch into the ¢au$es.
$ymplom5 and Ireatments is limited. NES wants to see more research in this area. lo supwt evidence-
based dia9nosis and treatment approache5. One ￿ the challenges is that the symptoms people
experience when stopping using topKal steroids can appear similar to those of poorly controlled
eczema. These symptoms can be very painful and di$tressin9. The S(Kiety is emphasising the
importance of using top￿1 sterotd treatments safely and effectwety. armj (kner things is Calling
for clearer labelling of lopKJ steroids to sh¢x their poterylstrength.
We mntinued lo our organisational capaaty to supwrt patient involvement in shaping research.
NES is approached regularly by researchers seeking patient views and lo leam from patient
experiences. It is $0 enccwjraging lo see such a range of iesearch undeThvay and new treatments in the
pipeline, foll0v￿ng 8 bng penod when eczema wa5 largety overlooked. The SOCW is active
supporting e¢zema reseaT¢h by participating in study steerin9 groups, promding patient perspectNes
for research trials, and working wrth universrties and compan*s that are a$$e$sing and developing t)ew
drug Irealments. We do this to help ensure eczema researth has the greatest chance of success in

Iralokinumab and hvo JAK-inhibitor treatments. upadacitinib and abwtinib. These new treatments lor
m(xlerate to sevefe eczerna were all approved for use by the NHS. We also contribuled lo several drug
assessments for the Scottish Medicines consortium {SMCI over the year. As eczema affects people in
different ways. it is importanl Ihat we have a range of I￿arment options to help ensure people Can
acce$$ o treatrrent that works effe¢tNely for them.

Regulatory Agency IMHRAI to support the Agency's ¢(￿nmUn￿tion programme lo raise awa￿ne$S of
fire risks of emc4b"ents. ErMIl￿nt pxkaying now comes tP4rth fire wamrng labels. Emollients are not
flammable in themselves. or when they are on the skin. H￿*ever. if bedding, cfolhing or dressings
containing dried emollient residue catches fire (from a naked Ilamel. they burn more quickty and

wbth a strong campaign for 2023. The Scciety prowded press thnmenl for a number of eczema stories
in the mgdia over the year. We achieved meTht￿ns on BBC Moming Live and BBC Online, as well as
coverage in the Daity Mail. Daity Tdegraph. The Times and i newspaper. on tcpi¢$ ranging fiom tests
for babies to predKt eczema risk. lo new treatments and TSW. The Society was also featured in several
professional publications induding the Nursing Standard. Capacty constraints and ccrfnpetin9 Priorities
tontsnue to impact on the pioactive me<lia work we ale able lo undert*e.
We continued lo gr(xv our social media reach and aclwity during the year, reflecting how people
incieasingly seek and share Informal￿n about eczema. The s￿Iety now has over 24,OCrf) followers on
Facebook. an increase of more than 1300 over the year. We also grew ourfolltyving on Twitterto neaty
8,500, and 10,000 on Instagram by the end of 2022.
Growing income and building financial sustainability
In 2022. we invested more resources in income generalton wilh the appointment of an experienced
fundraiser, Sammi Skelding, as Deputy Chief Executive. This refiects our commitment lo achieve our
charitable objectives and build futu￿ financial sustainab¢lty. We are immènsely grateful lo our
Ihou9htlul and generous supporters who choose to leave a grft to National Eczema So¢*ty in their Will.
Income tr￿￿ legacies was much l¢)wer in 2022 and this had a svJnifKanl impact on our overall income,
￿er￿nstrats"ng the wnportance of wioriiising legw gi￿ng act"Mty.
We continue to develop partnerships with companies that share our values and are willing to support
our work and engage in joint edU￿￿K)n and awarenessqaising activty. During the yearAbbVte, Dermal,
Eli Lilly. LEO Pharma and Sanofi were 811 corporate n*mbers. We are especially gr*efLI to staff and

There were many fundrai5irffJ hr9hlighls during the year. Incorr￿ from challe.nge everbls. including the
London Marathon, was much irnproved in 2022 following the disruptk)n caused by Covid. NES
organised several new fundraising events during the year. including the 'May Day March, and 'Cake
Bake Donate,, and thanks to everyone who took part and donated. Ha￿ng scoped oplitins, we took the
decision not to prwRed wih deveknping a product endorsement scheme. We contsnue to find it
challenging securing grants from ehariiable tntsts and fourKlation$.
The S￿lety's West Surrey and North-Eas1 Hampshire Support Group Ur￿ert00k various local
fundraising activities around Guikfford, and Presented a cheque for Q,OW at the Annual General
Meeting in September. In addition, group members raised over £600 through taking part in the Guildford
Rotary Annual Charity Sponsored Wafx. The Society's members and donors generousty supported our
summer and Christmas lundraisin9 appeals once again and we are grateful to everyone who supported
the Society in drflerent ways with Ih*r donatKJns over what has been a challenging year with cost of
Imng pressure5.
Organisational development
During the year, we started the prcKess of reviewing option$ and planning forthe Society's future oftice
requirements. The lease on the charty'5 current Oir￿e expire5 in March 2025 and future provision needs
to lake into account changing needs follcming the introduCt￿n of hybrid workin9 arfan9eff￿nts.

Flnanclal Results
The So¢iety planned for a deficit budget in 2022. atthough the ￿Ported figure is larger than anticipated.
It is disappointing lo experience Ihis def￿1t in 2022 after &hieving an operating surplLts for s&veral prior
years and rebuilding reserves to a stronger P)5rt￿n. The weaker 2022 result 15 largefy d¢)wn to lower
than expected income from kgary gffts.
Income for the yearwas £342,821. with expertditure at £413,759 ar￿ an annual deficit of £70.621. This
compares wrth a surplus of £185,322 in the year ended 31 Drfember 2021. AI 31 Oecember 2022. the
ScLiety had reserves of £651.070 (£721.691}.
We would like lo Ihank the many people v*tr￿. as in previous years, by joiniNJ or renewing their
membership, supporting our appeals an¢J fundraising in a variety of often innovative ways. have enabled
us to continue our work. The efforts and contr￿ut￿)n of supporters and volunteers is invaluable to the
Society. We are grateful also to those who remembered the SOc￿ty in their Wills, the charitable trusts
and companies th* have svpp)rted us during the year. and to all the heatth¢are professionals who
have provided u5 With so much time. a¢lice and $upF*Nt especialfy members ol the Medical Advisory
Board.
Reserves Policy

committed. Legacies form an important part of the Society's income. and whilst legacies can often be
subslanliaj relatNe lo overall income, they are Unp￿d￿ble and historical trends shcw there can be
periods of years Whe￿ this source of income is much kmer than the long-tem average. Expendrtu

Trustees last reviewed the Reserves Pol¢cy in 2022. and consider that holding unre51rrted reserves
equal lo approximatety six rI￿th$ un￿StriCted Charitable expendrture would be Sulficient to close or
merge the charity, shoukj this ever be necessary. However. gNen the known vokllity oflegacy income.
tNstee5 have detemiined a re5erve5 target of 12 months. future overheads expendrture is more
appropriate to respond to fl￿tU￿1￿$ in inco￿.
In order to make unrestrKted reseNes more transparent, fiJnd5 that are not ￿adity avaiLable to spend
are held in reserves designated for 5pecfft purposes. A key aim of the Society 15 to promote research
inl¢ the causes and treatment of eczema. Th¢5 being $0, the trustees have designated a proportion of
reserves to fund future research ¥tivty. in addrtKJn lo any fijnds that d(￿or5 have $pe¢ifically reSt￿led
for this purpose. Fvnd5 that are not readily available to spend. notabty those represented by fixed
assets, are hekl in a reserve desNJnated for this purpose. The pension reserve shows future deficit
payments owed in relation to an historical defined benefjl pension ￿￿eme (see note 19).
The balance held in unrestricted funds al 31 De￿ftber 2022 £644.319. Unrestricted funds include
funds lied up in tangible assets 01 £19,721. the pension reserye of (£8.5871 and designated Research
funds of £110.000. The remaining general funds of £523.185 are materially in line wrth the charty's

Risk Management
The trustees have taken sleps to identify and add￿5 major risks facing the S￿iety. in¢luding
maintaining a risk register. The principal uncertainty in reSp￿t to the Society's future is the ability to
maintain sufficient income to deliver the ¢hariVs services. and ensure the So¢*ty has adequate
resources lo cornpty with re9ulalory changes affecting the voluntary sector. Greater focu5 and
investment are being directed tofundraising actwities. to ensure the generates sufficient income
each year to fund pknned actNrt￿S. The financial OLrttum for the 2022 financBI year emphasises the
importance of building sustainable sources of non-legacy Inco￿￿.

The Society's goVerna￿e processes are set out in its Art￿e5 of Association. The Board of Trustees
administers Ihe S￿iety. whKh meets routinety four times a year and ad(liticffially as Circumstances
demand. A chief executNe is appointed by the trustees to manage the day4trday operations of the
Society within a framework agreed by the Board.
There must be a minimum of th￿e trustees but there is no maximum number. and tfustees must be
eleeled by the member5 oflhe Society at rts Annual General Meeling IAGMI. Trustees may be Cctropled
onlo the Board during the year and must then stand for election by the members at the next AGM. At
least a Ihird of trustees are required to rekn"refrom office each year but may, rfthey wish. offer themsefves

groups. other eczema communty ne￿orkS and open advertising. In seeking trustees. the sO¢￿ty has

oflhe UK.
Although not constitutionally binding. the So¢igty ￿she5 lo work towards aligning wtth the Charity
Govem8n¢e Code, which recommends tru51ees serve fixed lemis in 0￿e. The guidance recmimends
Iruslees serve an initial threfryear temi, with the possibilty of being reelected by members for a further
Ihree-year period. Trust￿ in part￿ular lo￿$ {e.g. Chair. Treasurer) could seNe a longer nine-year
period, subject to fomial review. One Cyr￿nt tN$tee has seNed bnger than nine years and provides

The Group accounts for its participat#￿ in this Plan as a defir*d conliibulion plan, a5 there is
insuff￿lent infomiatKJn available to a¢￿Unt for this as a defined benefft plan, as the share of ils
assets and liabllrt￿S cannot be klentified.
To evtyd ¢rystslliiro an imrnediale payment of the apparent under-fijnding in the Sefies 3 Scherne,
the Group is participating in the Series 3 Re￿Very Plan arKI the liabilty is inGluded in Notes 18 and
19. The GrcyJp recc*Jnises its liability to make payments to ftjnd the deficit relating to past seNice
under an agreerrEnl lo make those payments. 11 recognises the full liability for the present value of
¢ontributions pay*>le that results from the agreement for fvnding the Mu￿1 empk)yer plan.
The Group also participates in a defined contribLrtion pensicm scheme for its employees. Thg Group
pays fixed eonlributK)ns inlo a separate scheme. Once the deffined Contribution payments have been

In order to meet their share of the shortfall. the Charity has been asked to pay additional contributions to
the scheme until 2025. A full aduarial valuation was carried out by the actuaries at 30 September 2017
and the fundirtg shortfall calculated at that dale gave rise to a remeasurement reduction of £15.624 in the
deficit as at 31 December 2018. The deficit of the scheme is £8.587 (2021- £158T9J al 31 December
2022. The payment by the Charty in the year was £7,105 (2027 - £15,333) wfth an Inte￿$1 payment of
£130 f2021- £155) and a revaluation gain of £317 (2021- £(180J).
In addth"on. the Charrty elected to switch, wilh effect from 1 October 2013, from Series 3 to Series 4. a
defined contribution scheme. The pension cost in the accounts represents amounts payable by the charity
as ordinary employef ¢ontribulion5 to the Series 4 defined ¢onlribulion ftjnd.
During the year employer ￿ntrib(￿K}nS of £8.470 (2021- 16.857). inte￿t of £130 (2021- £155), aduarial

of £Nil (2021- £(33.959)J have been charged lo the Consolidated Statement of Financial Activities, along
wrth scheme costs of £3,625 (2021.. £Nil). There were no accrued contributions at 31 December 2022

The Pension reserve has been esla)lished lo sh￿# the pension deficil payments in regards to
defined benefit pension scheme. This pension scheme is being treated as a defined contribution pension
scheme as a reliable estimate cannot be made of the liabilty at the year end. The transfer of £10,730
was made to separate the deficrt payments due as at 31 Decembef 2022 from the Unre5tricled general
fund. Actuarial gains l {k)sses) are charged lo thks fund as they arise.
The Fixed asset fund has been established lo rellecl the fun¢Js tied up in Tangible and Intangible fixed
assets and agrees back to the Net Book Value presented ￿ the Consolidated Balance Sheet.
Depie¢iabon is charged to this fund as expenditu￿.
The Research fund has been established lo designate funds lor research into the causes and treatment
of eczema, which is a key airn of the S￿iety. The Society will provide grants to ￿SearCherS on a periodic
basis and it is necessary to designate sfftient re5eNes to fund the expected 9ranl costs. The fund is
expected to be utilised and grants awarded ccThmenong in the finanual year to 31 December 2024.
