**LISTER AREA KIDNEY PATIENTS ASSOCIATION**

**Supporting kidney patients**

## LAKPA **ANNUAL REPORT** 2021.

## **1. Overview.**

**The year 2021 has been a momentous year for our charity. Kidney patients were advised not to continue “shielding” by the Government, but many patients continued to do so. The new Chiltern Kidney Centre opened at last! LAKPA received an incredible legacy from our committee member Tom Costello, which has transformed the support we can offer to kidney patients and their families.**

## **2. Priorities for the Year.**

**The LAKPA Trustees set the following priorities for their work during 2021**

**a) Increasing the support for patients and their families in the context of Covid**

**b) Supporting the Trust in building a fairer provision for kidney patients and their families**

**c) Bidding for external funding**

**d) Luton relocation e) Transport**

**We made significant progress in delivering on priorities a, c d and e, helped in no small measure by the bequest from Tom Costello which meant that we did not need to expend time and energy on bidding for external funding. We need to engage further with Trust staff in relation to priority b.**

## **3. Opening of the Chiltern Kidney Centre on 11th October.**

**The new centre was officially opened by Ellen Schroder, Chair of the East and North Herts Hospital Trust on a joyful morning on October 2021. It was wonderful to see this long-standing project bearing fruit after many years. LAKPA was represented on the project group by Tony Heath and Kirit Modi and we are most grateful to Tony for his hard work and passion in ensuring the new Centre met the needs of patients. The Centre is impressive, and patients and staff greatly welcomed its establishment. We are hoping that the Centre will now provide a wider range of services to kidney patients in the area.**

## **4. Tom Costello’s legacy and budget.**

**We were surprised and delighted to learn that LAKPA had been given a substantial bequest from Tom Costello who was a committed and passionate supporter of LAKPA - his partner was a dialysis patient and even after her death he continued to sit on the LAKPA committee and was instrumental in raising significant funds for us.**

**We were anxious to ensure that the money was used to reflect the wishes of patients, so we carried out an extensive survey and, as a result, agreed to fund improvements to waiting areas, to make provision for supporting patients financially and to finance a series of trips to the coast for patients and their**

**families. The balance of the bequest to be invested in both long and short term funds to ensure that we can maintain support for kidney patients over the coming years. We are also working on a strategy to ensure that we can maintain a funding stream to support our patients as the cost of living crisis continues to bite.**

## **5. Support to patients.**

**We are very conscious of the way that the current pressures on household budgets disproportionately affects kidney patients - their condition affects their ability to work, and they face extra costs as they feel the cold and often have to follow expensive special diets.**

**We have been working with the renal social work team to provide targeted financial support in the form of Food vouchers, energy cost support and grants where there is a need. We are conscious too of the mental health issues that many patients face and continue to support the Peer Support initiative as well as working closely with the renal social work team in identifying potential areas of benefit to our patients.**

**We are fortunate in having a social work team led by Maria da Silva Gane who is so committed to working collaboratively with us, supporting patients most in need. We are very grateful to them all.**

## **6. Transport.**

**We have continued to monitor Non Emergency Patient Transport (NEPTS) throughout the year which provided some challenges as, in April 2021, with the move to Integrated Care Groups, our area was split geographically. We are building relationships with both Contract Managers and will be working with them to represent the patient voice as new contracts are developed.**

## **7. WKD and Hitchin Health Awareness Day.**

**Unfortunately, continuing concerns about Covid meant that we were unable to celebrate World Kidney Day in March with an event in Lister Hospital as had been our practice pre Covid. However, as the law had recently been changed to deemed consent for the use of organs after death, we decided to concentrate on publicising this. Working with the Trust’s Communications team we highlighted the life saving importance of organ donation and produced press releases relating the story of 6 local kidney transplant recipients, several of which were taken up by local papers and radio channels. In September we were able to support the Hitchin Health Awareness Day with a stand in Hitchin market place. We used the day to focus on promoting organ donation and the importance of looking after your kidneys. We were blessed with good weather**

**and a steady stream of visitors throughout the day made this a worthwhile event and we are grateful to Andrew Bullen for organising this.**

## **8. Partnership with BNI.**

**Towards the end of 2021 LAKPA was invited by the Business Network International Ware chapter to become their Charity of the Year. BNI is an international business networking organisation, and each chapter is given one charity seat.**

**We were proud and delighted to accept this invitation as it meant that all their charity fund raising will be to LAKPA’s benefit and their first event after we had taken up the invitation – the 2021 Christmas raffle - raised £600 for us. In addition to the donations this collaboration will bring, it also gives the opportunity to spread the message about organ donation and kidney health to the wider audience.**

## **9. NKF Executive.**

**I was delighted that two LAKPA committee members, Ros Aird and Tarsem Paul, were elected as Executive members of the National Kidney Federation. This will provide them with a wonderful opportunity to represent kidney patients and carers**

**at a national level. I had the great honour of being invited to continue as the Hon President of the NKF.**

## **10. Conclusion.**

**I am most grateful to all LAKPA committee members for their incredible support and commitment to improving the lives of kidney patients and their families during a most challenging time because of Covid. Our partnership with Dr Praveen Jeevaratnam, the Clinical Director for Renal Services at the Trust, his team and Kevin Howell, Head of Estates at the Trust and his team, was strengthened as we met regularly via zoom to discuss how we can keep patients safe and help improve their lives. It is a great**

Dear Trustees,

Ref: Independent examination of the accounts for the year end 31 December 2021

I have finished my review on the accounts and have the following comments:

The accounts presented by your treasurer were all in good order. However, I have talked to Mr Byrne about the need to keep records for the small amount of petty cash you have.

The usual method is to start by withdrawing say £100 from the bank and putting it into a petty cash tin. Then when money is given out the receipt for the purchases should be put back into the tin. When all the money is spent you should have £100 worth of receipts, all with Petty Cash written on them. Then repeat the process.

Should you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me.

Yours faithfully
