2020 Achievements

The past year has been, as for many, been challenging time for BASICS Devon. The charity has continued to support twelve volunteer doctors to respond to medical and trauma emergencies across Devon. The COVID19 pandemic has meant that our doctors have been even busier than usual, and we are enormously grateful for all the time they have volunteered.

During 2020 we welcomed Dr Simon Fairclough to the team. He lives in Barnstaple and works as a GP at RAF Chivenor; we hope that this is the start of more responders across the North Devon area.

During the COVID-19 pandemic our volunteers have continued to respond to sick and injured patients across Devon. Total call-out numbers are slightly reduced this year, reflecting both a small drop in responder availability and a drop in road-related trauma during lockdown

A recent story highlights the importance of the team and how their specialist skills and expertise are crucial to the communities they serve. When Sam Pooley and Tom Shads welcomed their baby girl Lyla, born on November 26 via Caesarean section, she displayed no signs or symptoms to suggest that there would be any complications. However, days later her parents discovered that Lyla had become unwell and rapidly turned 'grey and floppy'. Fortunately, her parents began CPR and two BASICS Devon volunteers arrived on the scene, to help save the babies life.

One volunteer doctor also went back a few days later to check on the family; an example of the caring and dedication the volunteers demonstrate to their communities

Fundraising Review 2020-2021

A challenging year for the charity sectors indeed. Fortunately, as a frontline charity, grants supported us surprisingly well and have helped us through some very unpredictable times. Continued support of the Local Coop Community Fund with a wonderful amount raised. Emergency fund applications were our main source of funds totalling £20,140 from Devon Community Foundation, The National Lottery, Wales & West Utilities and the Sir John & Lady Amory Charitable Trust. During the peak of the pandemic, we also received support from the local councils towards equipment and volunteer support costs.

Community Fundraising took the biggest hit but we did have Monty’s Cycle which was a great event, and Tony’s Morris for Medics;100 song challenge.

We increased our online presence and launched the

first online fundraising appeal, The Big Give Christmas Challenge which raised £5665, and had the amazing support of local groups The League of Friends of Newton Abbot Hospitals, Premier Communication Electronics, Holsworthy & District Lions Club and St Giles Women’s Guild and The Saturday Hospital Fund, to which we are very grateful. We also launched our first ever newsletter, with 39 subscribers.

Instagram a new platform now has 161 followers and LinkedIn 32 connections and 68 followers on the Business page. The website has had a 48% increase in visits compared to last year.

Chocaccino Knitting Group have continued to dedicate their donations to our cause, which we are thankful for, even though their group had to stop meeting.

Tesco Bags for Help in Braunton was also a good opportunity for the charity to raise awareness.

Two doctors were able to attend virtual talks with the Rotary Club of Brixham and the Rotary Club of Okehampton. Rotary Club of Barnstaple also donated towards our response bags for the North Devon responders. Plym Lodge of Freemasons made a donation as their lodge sadly closed and we thank them for their support over the years.

Individual Giving began with two regular donors donating monthly. We also had a large Legacy and In Memory Of (IMO) Giving is in the process of being promoted with the setup of Much-Loved tribute Fund, set to go live by July 2021. A Legacy leaflet is also being produced.

Public support has been very apparent and other charities in the region such as Plymouth Hospitals Charity have become aware of our mission and hopefully exploring partnerships such as this and others will help develop the charity in the future.

The media have taken additional interest in our volunteers, with BBC Radio Devon and TV coverage. We hope this continues and further fundraising initiatives and support will be explored and implemented.

Social media following has increased by 14% on Facebook followers from 1326 in April 2020 to 1511 June 2021. Twitter from 1530 to 1725,

HELP Appeal Grant

One of our major achievements of 2020 was securing funding from the HELP appeal, in partnership with the BASICS national charity. BASICS Devon was successful with a grant application which has enabled us to purchase and fully equip our very own scheme response vehicle. We envisage this being used to provide responder cover across the county, as well as providing a training, education and team-working platform.

We are in the process of finalising logistics for the management of the vehicle. It is a major milestone for the scheme to which we are extremely grateful and excited to launch. The grant has also provided a blue- light fit for our new North Devon responder.

Objectives for 2021

As a charity, we have seen increasing challenges on our volunteer’s time. In order to maintain active responding, there are many logistical challenges, such as replacing equipment, stocking drugs, driver training and vehicle inspections to name a few. We would like to reduce the administrative burden on our volunteer doctors in order to increase the time available for response work

Operations Support Officer – Create a part-time post to support the operational side of the charity and reduce the administrative burden.
Response Vehicle – Start running regular shifts with our new vehicle. BASICS doctors may work alongside a volunteer paramedics, nurses or allied health professionals and medical students, with the aim of facilitating patient care and providing education and training
Non-Medical Responders – Work with SWASFT (South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust) to facilitate allied health care professionals volunteering initially on the BASICS Devon Response Vehicle and longer term as solo responders
Additional Responders – Support a number of interested and appropriately - trained doctors to respond.
Blue Light Driving – work with South Western Ambulance Service to find a sustainable and longer-term solution for blue light driver training for new responders
Fundraising – continue to deliver our fundraising strategy, as able; as COVID-19 restrictions lift it may become possible again to meet face-to-face with donors, and maybe even hold some fundraising events
Administration – embed the use of Sage accounting

I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of Basics Devon ( the Trust) for the year ended 31/03/21

Responsibilities and basis of report:

As the charity trustees of the Trust you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (The Act)

I report in respect of my examination of the Trusts accounts carried out under Section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under Section 145(5)(b)of the Act.

Independent examiners statement

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect

accounting records were not kept in respect of the trust as required by Section 130 of the Act; or
the accounts do not accord with those records.

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report to enable proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
