Group Scout Leader's Report 2024-25
This year has been one of collaboratson. growth. and celebratron for our Group. l am delighted that
last November Sara Daines. previously Deputy Group Scout Leader. stepped up to become Joint
Group Lead Voluiileer, sharing tlie leadership responsibilities with me. Saia has been a faniastiG
partner in leading the Group, dedicating her time and energy to volunteer recruitment and providing
exceptional support to all sections, but in particular our Cubs sections. Her enthusiasm,
organisation, and commitment hav8 made a real difference. and I would like to extend my sincere
thanks to har for all her hard work and positivity.
Earlier this year. the 183rd Hillsborough Trinity Scoul Group was at risk of closure. However, we
are proud to say that the 150th Group has stepped in to support them through shared leadership
and volunteer reSoUr￿s. This collaboration has ensured that Scouting continues in the area,
offering young people the opportunities and experiences they deserve. A huge thank you goes to
everyone involved in making this possible, especially to the sections who have welcomed the
183rd and shared programme ideas, activities, and joint camps to help them thrive.
Across the wider Scouts organisation, a national restructure has taken place, moving towards a
team-based volunteering model. Alongsid8 this, w8 hav8 S88n th8 introduction of a n8w adult
m8mbarship systom. We would like to express our gratitude to all our volunteers who have
dedicated time to leaming these new systems, adapting to change, and ensuring that everything
continuÈs to run smoothly for OLJr young people.
Flnally, thls year marks an incredible milestone, our Group's 100th year! We have already
celebrated with a wonderful Group Camp, and we're looking forward to holding a few more events
to mark this special occasion. What a fantastic achievement for everyone involved, past and
present.
Membership
This year, we saw a 5.2 % increase in youth membership, wth a total membership Increase of
3.5 /0. Our current numbers are:
Beavers: 48
Cubs: 85
Scouts: 92
Adults.. 68
Whilo this growth is oncouraging, we ramain limitod by tho nood for moro rogular voluntaors. At
present, 63 young people are on our waiting list. and our youth sections could welcome even more

m8mbors if we had additional adult leaders. Although it's been great to see increased parent
engagement and more occasional helpers stepping forNard. recruiting regular volunteers for key
roles continues to be a challenge.
Attached to this ￿port are graphs taken from the January 2025 census, which highlight our
Group's growth and trends over recent years. There is also a comparison with the national
averages for Scout Groups across tho UK. Notably. our Group size remains nearly four times
larger than the national average, with each of our sections almost double the size of the average
Scout section. We efjntinue to be one of the largp.qt grnijps in Snijth Yorkshire.
This significant achievement reflects the hard work and dedication of our volunteers to deliver
engaging and impactful programmes. It also underscores the invaluable support of our Trustee
Board and support voluntaars, who play a critical rolo in tha successful management and growth of
the Group. Their combined efforts ensure we continue to provide enriching experiences for our
young members.
In temis of diversity, our group's demographics show areas of strength and some gaps when
compared to national averages:
Gender: Natlonally, around 26 /0 of Scouts tneTnber5 are feTTldle. Wliicli is 1 % lower Ihan
the previous year. This is broken down into 21.30/0 for youth and 31.5 % for adults, showing
higher male-to-female ratio.
Ethnicity: Nationally, about 60k of Scouts members identify as from minority ethnic
backgrounds. This has fallen in the past year. whila our group's numbers are slightly higher,
with 8.4910 of youth and just 3.50k of adults from non.white British backgrounds.
Disabilities: Approximately 120/0 of Scouts nationally identify as having a disability, which
has increased by 40/.. In contrast. 230A of our youth mernberq (up by 70/0) 2nd 11 O/n of our
adult members report having disabilitses or health issues, reflectsng our group's inclusive
approach.
These figures demonstrate our successes in inclusivity and also highlight the areas where we can
focus on further diversity and recruitment efforts.
Programmes & Nightsaway
Our Leaders have continued to delivar engaging and inclusive pro9rammes. Their dedication has
ensured our young people enjoy the adventures of Scouting. Some highlights from our activities
this year indude:

Thas8 activitias not only providgd fijn and laaming opportunitias but also fostered the development
of essential life skills.
We were thrilled to offer a wide range of Nights Away experiences. with 13 different events totalling
1132 Nights Away experiences for our members. Highlights included:

The dedication of our leaders Sn organlslng these events has been outstandlng. enabllng our
mefflbeis to Gieale lifelong memoiies and frieiidships.
Community Engagement & Fundraising
The annual bonfire event has now become a well-established and much-anticipated fixture in the
local community calendar. Last year's event attracted nearly 1,000 attendees and raised over
£4.000, making it both a highly successful community occasion and a significant fundraiser for the
Group. The proceeds wlll support the continued enhancement of our programmes and resources
for younq people. The event also plays an important role in strenqtheninq our relationship with the
local community, and we extend our sincere thanks to all volunteers whose efforts made it such a
SUGGess.
Over the past year, the dedication and commitment of our adult volunteers have been outstanding.
The countless hours spent planning and running weekty sessions. organising events. and
supporting camps have been invaluable. In addition. our youth members have actively contributed
to their communities through various projects and activities. Collectively, the time and effort put in
by both adults and young people have created a significant social impact, with the estimated social
value of these contributions amounting to £31,286. This highlights not only the importance of our
volunteer team but also the positive difference our group make3 Within the wider community.
Facilities & Maintenance
We would like to extend our thanks to Aaron King. our dedicated handy person, for his ongoing
support in maintaining our Scout hut. Our gratitude also goes to Craig Smith. who sourced a grant
and managed the project to install solar power and LED lighting. Thank you as well to the
volunteers who helped tidy and organise our Quarteimaster (QM) store in Ihe absence of a QM
volunteer. We are excited to welcome our new QM team, vtho have just formed and will be taking
on the responsibility of organising and lookin9 after our equipment.

We have identified areas of our HQ that are in need of refurbishment, and plans are already in
place to address these over the next year, ensuring our facilities continue to provide a safe and
welcoming environment for all members.
Gratitude & Acknowledgements
We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to all our leaders, occasional helpers, and
behind-the-scenes volunteers for their unwavering support and dedication. Your commitment is
what makes the 150th Sheffield Scout Group such a vibrant and successfvl community.
A special mention goes to Aaron King, vtho received hls 25-year serrfice award. Aaron was d150
responsible for pulling everything toqether to make the Big 100 camp happen. We would also like
to say a huge Thank You to all the incredible volunteers who supported this unforgettable
weekend! From the countless hours of planning, to the mountains of cooking, to the non-stop
energy running activities, their commitment and crcativity brought our 100 year celebration to lif6 in
the most spectacular way. They gave their time, their talents. and their heart, and it showed in
every smile, every gam8, and every shared moment. We would also like to our fabulous Explorer:
they were everywhere, stepping up. leading with confidence. and making magic happen. They
were not just helping they were inspiring.
Looking ahead, we remain committed Io addressing the ongoing challenges of volunteer
recruitment and expanding our membership. while continuing to deliver outstanding programmes
that enrich the livas of our young mambers. We are delighted to have recently opened our first
Squirrels Drey, welcoming thildren aged 4 to 5 years old. and we're already seeing the positive
impact this has on both the young people and the Group as a whole. The section is proving io be
very popular, and wp would love to open more in the future
though this will only be possible with
the support of ad(litionai volunteers.
In the year ahead, we are also looking to improve our facilitias. ensuring our HQ continues to meet
the needs of our growing Group. In addition, we are considering how best to fomialise our support
for the 183rd Hillsborough Trinity Scout Group. to ensure a sustainable and effects've structure for
the future.
As we ￿lebrate our 100th year, it is inspiring to see the continued dedication of our volunteers and
the enthusiasm of our young members. With this momentum. we are confident that Scouting in our
local area will continue to thrive and grow for many years to come.
