## Group Scout Leader’s Report 2021-22

From April 2021 Covid-19 was still impacting the Group with restrictions on activities we were able to provide. However, as more restrictions were lifted we saw the return of more activities and nights away events. It has been fantastic to see our Group bounce back and to see our members enjoying the adventure of Scouting once again.

## Membership

Our membership, like others across the UK, dropped in 2020-21. I am happy to report that we have seen a significant increase in our youth membership in 2021-22. We are still below our pre-pandemic numbers, however, I am happy with the increase and comfortable with our current membership size. Although our youth membership has begun to bounce back we still haven’t seen any increase in adult volunteers since our 33% fall between 2020 & 2021. This does present the Group with challenges, particularly with succession planning.

The Group has produced an organisational chart to help everyone understand the Groups structure. It also helps us highlight the areas and sections in which we need more support from volunteers. I would like to urge everyone to take a look at the chart and see if there are any roles that they feel they might be able to help with currently we have 18 roles we need to fill. In addition to these specific roles, we are always in need of people to help our volunteers either by staying at the end of the night to pack away or just washing up before you leave. If you can help with anything of this sort, please speak to the Section Leader.

The total membership for the Group 2021/22 was 297. This was made up of 48 Beavers, 85 Cubs, 100 Scouts and 64 adult members. We also had 29 Occasional Helpers. This equates to an increase in youth members by 9% and no change in adult members. This increase is a testament to the hard work our volunteers have put into getting back to Scouting after these difficult two years.

Attached to this report are graphs taken from the January 2022 census, which show how we have changed in the last few years. There is also a graph which compares our Group to the national average in the UK. As you will see from the data, our Group size is nearly five times larger than the national average and our sections are almost double the national average. Again, this is a testament to the amazing job our Leaders do in providing excellent programmes and our Executive Committee and other volunteers do in supporting and managing the Group.

## Programmes & Nightsaway

It has been great to see members back at our Scout HQ with the return of our regular activities and visitors. We have also seen the return of our Nights Away programmes too. We are not back to our full programmes yet but we hope to be in the near future. There were too many great activities and trips to mention but here are some of the highlights;

- Scouts Expedition Challenge

- Beaver Sleepovers

- Panto visit to Hillsborough College

- Scouts Winter Weekend

- Scouts JOTA/JOTI camp

- Zombie night on Common

- Sausage making

- Glow in the dark night

- Escape Rooms

- Pioneering for big and small people

- Chip Shop Challenge

- Biscuit Olympics

- Science nights

- Learning about health, and

- Lots of creative things too.

As well as taking part in these fantastic activities our young members earnt 1,891 badges including 36 Chief Scout’s Awards.

We have also seen the return of our Group events with a fantastic firework display and event. This turned out to be the largest bonfire night event we have ever held with parents and children from the Group and many others from the community. It was a brilliant evening and it was great to see so many people there. Thank you to all the volunteers who made this happen and a special thank you to Aaron King for his tireless effort in organising it.

## Training & Awards

All adult leaders (Section Leaders, Assistant Section Leaders & Section Assistants) have to undertake training as part of their role. The training is divided up into modules. As a Group, we have tried hard to focus on making sure our leaders are getting the training they want and need. This year our volunteers have completed an amazing 154 of these training modules. This year 3 our leaders have completed all of their training and have achieved their Wood Beads. Alongside the training scheme, all our volunteers have to keep up with the mandatory safeguarding and safety training. This is just some of the behind-the-scenes work our volunteers have to do to make sure our members are safe. Thank you to everyone who has kept this up.

## Thanks

I would like to finish by thanking everyone who has helped either in leading a camp or just in a small way. Everything you have done for the Group helps to make it the success it is and provides us all the opportunity to change lives for the better.
