IMPACT REPORT 2019 – 2020

The Friends of King’s College School (“ The Friends ”) is a registered charity which was founded by parents in 1978. Its objectives are to further the education of pupils at King’s College School Wimbledon (“ King’s ”) and pupils at other schools in the maintained sector and overseas with which King’s has a formal relationship (“ Partnership schools ”)

During 2019/2020, in accordance with our charitable objectives, The Friends supported the school community and raised over £77,000 gross funds through a range of events organised by parents who donated over 4500 hours of their time. We also welcomed new parents and brought parents together at informal social gatherings in 2019. Sadly, such in-person events were not possible in 2020 due to Covid-19.

We allocated £27,118 to projects to advance the education of those at King’s and our Partnership schools.

We remain enormously grateful to everyone who has attended or helped organise our events throughout 2019. No doubt 2020 will be challenging for all of us navigating Covid19, but we remain optimistic that parent support will continue undeterred.

OUR PEOPLE

The two Vice Chairs supported the Chair and Year Group Representatives. Meetings were held regularly and the VCs always readily available to answer any queries from the group. They also looked after key relationships with both the Junior and Senior Schools, delivering a busy and coordinated diary of Friends’ events and thoughtfully planned communications to parents on a host of subjects.

The 63 Year Group Reps organised events which enabled parents to get to know one another and supported Event committees by mobilising hundreds of volunteers.

The 11 event committees (seven fundraising and four non-fundraising) involved parents from across year groups. All fundraising committees were chaired or co-chaired by a member of the current Friends’ Council. Parents generously gave their time to deliver enormously successful events.

The 19 Council members met regularly throughout the academic year to review activities and to decide, on behalf of parents and in consultation with King’s, how best to allocate the funds raised in accordance with the charitable objectives set out in our Constitution.

Individual Council members looked after specific events and their committees or undertook supporting roles. Projects included fulfilling obligations to The Charity Commission and working with King’s to implement

OUR ACTIVITIES

Our fundraising activities in 2019/2020 were limited due to Covid-19: Christmas Fair, Quiz Night (just before lockdown) and Second Hand Uniform Sales. We also hosted two non-fundraising events where parent teams worked alongside school staff to organise the Careers Fair and Community Tea.

The Partnership liaison monitored The Friends’ integration with King’s Partnership schools and initiatives throughout the year.

OUR IMPACT

Feedback from projects and items funded makes the efforts of our army of volunteers worthwhile. Items are purchased and integrated into use as soon as possible. Recent testimonials include:

Bursaries: “Going to King’s opens doors for you.”

Amplifiers: “In regular use with both school and pupil led bands and are considerably lighter than the older systems so are very popular as pupils transport them around the school site.”

Football Goals: “U12 Teams and in particular the goalkeepers have developed by being challenged but not disheartened with the correct size goals for their age group. More home fixtures have already been organised.”

Lighting Console: “It’s always a destination for lunchtime and off lesson learning for pupils wanting to learn more about this exciting aspect of technical theatre.”

The Student View – journalism programme at Partnership schools: “Seeing how easily distracted 12 year olds have grown in enthusiasm and levels of literacy has made me excited for every Friday afternoon.”

FUNDS RAISED

Our fundraising efforts raised over £47,000 net. Significant contributions included:

Christmas Fair £28,088 Quiz Night £9,170 Second Hand Uniform Sales £10,404

These events continue to popular fundraising events, despite increased costs for the Christmas Fair due to increased technology costs and the printed magazine being discontinued.

Second Hand Uniform Sales’ revenue has almost doubled in just two years. This is an incredibly popular affordable resource for parents. All funds raised are donated to the Bursary Fund.

BIDS PROCESS

Each term, the Council received collated bids from the Development Office for funds from members of the school community. Each bid took the form of a business case, endorsed by the relevant head of department and is required to advance the education of pupils at King’s or our Partnership schools and would not otherwise be funded. The Council discussed the relative merits of each bid, requested further information as necessary and voted accordingly.

In September the Council again voted to pre-authorise £7,000 for our Partnerships programmes, for items consistent with those funded in previous years, rather than receiving individual bids for Partnership items. This year we allocated £27,118.

LOOKING FORWARD

We actively work to strengthen the sense of community at King’s and to further enhance the already strong relationship between The Friends and the broader school community in innovative and creative ways within the restrictions of Covid-19. We will continue to work with the school to review the bids process and ensure it best reflects the school’s budgeting timetable and educational needs. We will aim to dispense funds to projects at King’s and our Partnership schools that embody the values of The Friends. Given the current pandemic, we will explore new systems and technologies, in line with GDPR restrictions, not only improve communications through social media, but also to adopt virtual platforms for future initiatives and events.

We are immensely grateful to everyone who helped organise, support or attended our events. Without the efforts of our many supporters and volunteers, our results and the King’s sense of community would be diminished. The organisation of the fundraising events is rrranaged on dayvtO•day basis by individinl event conwnittees ￿de up dparents from different year groups of the School. Each event committee is chaired by or under the control of a current member of the Council. Due to the Covld-19 pandenM¢ the final Council ￿￿etIng for the year dJ not take place. With the invaluable help of the parent volunteer% especialty zhe Year Group Rewesentstives. The Friends have coM￿eted another year of successful fundrnisin& although disapp)intingly the Covid-19 pandernlc has resuhed in the postpmement of our Summer Term events. These activitie5 have added a net £47.662 (tefore project expenditu￿) to the opening funds of 142,612. Projeccs totalting £67,709 have ￿en conyleted during 2019-20 and detai15 of this expendlture can be seen in note 6 to the financial staThents. As at 31° July 1020, £68.468 has been committed to further ex￿ndIture on Khool proiecrs. Profits achieved on the sale of second hand unlforn)s are donated to KCS Entewises as a contrlbutlon to bursaries. Due to the on&ng p3ndemiG the Trustees have Tr￿de the decision to postpone our large scale Autumn Tem events includin8 Firework& and the Chrlstmas Fair where signrficant lead tlmes are required to ortdnise such event& This wTrll have an adverse effect on our fundraising efforts for 2020. The Surrnrer Ball which was due to take place at The Hurlingham Club. London in May 2020 has teen reKheduled for April 2021 and a deposit of £23,940 is held by the venue. The Yiability of this event 1$ being kept under re¥￿W and rf it is necessary to cancel, charge may arlse. The Charty has a very close relailonshlp wlth Kinls Colle8E SclKX)I which is a charir/ and which nomlnates some of the Trustees of The Friends. Internal risks are minimised by the impFemenration of forffAI procedure5 for rhe authorlsatlon of all transactions and projects.
