The Committee and Trustees are elected by the membership at the Annual General Meeting. **Objectives and Activities** The aims of the U3a are to promote the further education and well-being of middle aged and older members, who are not in full time remunerated employment in Dorking and the surrounding area. Live, Laugh and Learn. Dorking & District U3a supports and encourages more than 60 interest groups, all of which are led by the members. An example of subjects covered are Art Appreciation, Architecture, Music, Bridge, Pilates, Exercise Classes, Walking, Languages and Science, Photography plus many others. In organising the many activities of the U3a, the Trustees are mindful of the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit and are grateful to the unstinting efforts of the many volunteers who make the Charity so effective. ## **DORKING & DISTRICT U3a** ## **Trustees Annual Report for year ending 31 March 2023 continued.** ## **Achievement and Performance** During this financial year emphasis has been on recovery from the effects of the pandemic, endeavouring to encourage the membership to return to face-to-face meetings, outings and residential trips. Monthly meetings have been held at St Joseph’s Church Hall and conducted as a hybrid meeting for those not wishing to physically attend the meeting. Attendance figures are now increasing. The first residential trip was to South Devon in May, followed by an autumnal trip to the Peak District in October. Both were well supported and successful. Day trips happened every two months and were well supported, especially the Christmas Cruise on the Thames and a visit to Chatham Dockyard. In order to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee in June, a Pimm’s and Cake Picnic was held at Buckland Park Lakes. This was attended by nearly 100 members and deemed to be very successful. A Barn dance was held in September and again was well supported. The final event of this financial year was a very successful Quiz night. During the year efforts have been made to revive existing groups and introduce new ones such as Photography, Badminton, Local History and Spanish. We are pleased to welcome back Singing for Pleasure. A Group Leaders lunch was held in February. In addition, quarterly Newsletters have been published for the membership. General Membership is now increasing at a good rate. ## **Financial Review** The accounts to the end of the financial year in March 2023 show the gradual recovery from the pandemic effect. Although membership subscriptions show a slight reduction on the previous year, partially due to the fact that the subscription rate has not been increased. Costs have been carefully monitored and show a slight decrease on the previous year, despite the cost-of-living crisis. The administration balance at the end of March 2023 showed a small increase of 9% from £9,184 to £10,072 The policy of the Dorking & District U3a is to retain general fund reserves equivalent to six months normal expenditure. The Trustees consider the reserves to be sufficient and believe that they have not been duly affected by the pandemic ## **DORKING & DISTRICT U3a** ## **Trustees Annual Report for year ending 31 March 2023 continued.** The Groups surplus balance reflects the resumption of the group activity and the introduction of new groups.
