Charity Number 1004278 ## THANA TRUST TRUSTEES ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE YEAR TO 30th APRIL 2023 ## THANA TRUST ## TRUSTEES REPORT The Trustees present their report and Financial statements for the year ended 30th April 2023 ## **STATEMENT OF TRUSTEES RESPONSIBILITIES** Charity law requires the Trustees to prepare statements of accounts for each finan year, which gives a trus and fair view of the affairs of the charity and its incoming resources and applicatons of resources for that period. In preparing those financia statements the Trustees are required:- - select suitablle accounting policies and apply them consistently; - make judgements and estimates that are responsible and prident; - prepare financial statements on a going concern basis - value assets and liabilities in accordance with the Statement of Recommended Practice Accounting for Charities. The Trustees are responsible for keeping proper accounting records which are sufficient to show and explain the Charities actvities and to disclose with reasonab accuracy at any time the financial position of the Charity, and to enable them to en any statement of account comply with the requirements of the Charity (Accounts a Reports) Regulations 1995. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charity and hence taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities. ## **REFERENCE AND ADMINISTRATIVE DETAILS** The Charity was established by a Deed of Trust dated 18th Februaary 1991. It is a registered charity number 1004278. The adminstration address is 4 Rosegate, Aglinby, Carlisle CA4 8AJ Trustees from the 1st May 2022 to the date of this report were: C B K Danby J Payne D Mackay The appointment of new Trustees come through recommendation for any existing Trustee and will be ratified by unanimous agreement. The new Trustee would go through an induction period and would likey to have known about the work of Bethany Hospital, Thana, Mumbia and its outreach work in India through a visit. The Trustees continue to be grateful to Dr Alfred and his wife Claire for their tireless and sacrificial leadership and work. Bethany Hospital is a 200-bed hospital situated in Thane, on the outskirts of Mumb India. It was established in 1997 with a vision to provide quality healthcare, caterin especially to sections of the community who would otherwise find these services b their means. In normal times, managing a hospital of this size is never easy. But in 2020, we were faced with the unprecedented Covid-19 crisis. Within days, one of of our buildings was set apart as a dedicated Covid-19 centre. Starting with 15 ICU ward beds, we had to eventually scale up to the building’s full capacity of 75 beds Thane is a suburb of Mumbai city with a population of 5 million people, overnight 2020, we were left open to scores of Covid positive patients, along with tens of th of migrants, who were unable to go back to there villages, and were stranded on th and the slums of Thane, as small businesses closed and as the city went into lock d the situation became acute. In addition to this, health care staff working in the Covid unit at Bethany had to be isolated from the non covid staff, the logistics of arranging accommodation for mo than a 100 staff overnight, was overwhelming. Two local schools came to our rescue and gave us there premises , and a make shif hostel was created, with food being supplied by our hospital caterers. The cycle of getting infected, and all the contacts being isolated, put immense pressure on an already depleted staff force. We first opened our hospital to Covid-19 patients in the end of march 2020. Thoug initial steps were taken nervously and reluctantly, we have seen the Lord lead us graciously to manage what is now a hospital fully able to meet the coronavirus requirements. At any given time we have had ten patients on the ventilator . From 1st April 2020 31st March 2021, we have treated more than 2,800 Covid-19 positive cases as inp at our facility and around 3500 as outpatients . Of these, around 96% recovered completely and were discharged. The mortality rate stands at 3.7% and the numbe patients screened for coronavirus symptoms until 31 March 2021 is over 96,500. At the same time from 1st April 2020 to 31st March 2021 in the Non Covid side we Total number of surgeries performed 1764. seen 8910 inpatients who were admitted and treated along with over 78,000 outp ## **TRUSTEES REPORT continued** ## **Unchartered Waters** With the pandemic of 2020 being a major hit on the operation of the hospital bringing a lot of uncertainty both medically and administratively., with Mumbai and Thane being among the most Covid-affected areas in India, the pressure on the hospital was unrelenting. Municipal authorities kept up the demand for more bed, we enter 2021/22 financial year depended upon the support and prayers of many people around the world. To our relief, the non-Covid section of the hospital continued to function. Emergency laparotomies, surgeries and deliveries were regularly scheduled. The radiation therapy department saw about 70 patients a day. Patients also came in for chemotherapy all along even at the peak of Covid. Everyone was screened as per protocol. To keep the hospital running under such extraordinary circumstances required an above normal flow of funds. Bethany has taken a substantial financial hit due to the expenses of its Covid centre. There are several reasons for this including: the significantly higher cost of treating a Covid patient due to barrier nursing and use of personal protective equipment (PPE); healthcare staff working shorter shifts and having to be paid more as incentive; and the policy to treat our staff and their relatives infected by Covid free of charge. We expect to keep the Covid section open, for another twelve months, by which time, we are hoping and praying that the pandemic would have run its natural course and become endemic . Our main challenge at present is dealing with several non-Covid cases. Patients are either reporting late for treatment or are missing their appointed follow-up out of fear. This has led to a few patients coming in with added problems. In the Radiotherapy Unit a total of 840 patients have finished their course of radiotherapy for different types of malignancies mainly head face and neck. Our community health projects at Dolkammb and the surrounding villages continues to flourish and so does our HIV/AIDS programs in the community in and around the city of Thane . ## INCOME AND EXPENDITURE In support of this work, legacies and gifts amounted to £171,908 and with interest received the total income for the year £190,773 The Funds at the year ended amounted to £225,966 compared with £422,134 at 30th April 2022 The Trustees are confident that the reserves are more than sufficient for the functioning of the Charity. I report in respect of my examintaion of the Trust's accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145 95) (b) of the Act. Independent examiner's statement I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect: - 1 Accounting records were not kept in respect of the Trust as required by section 130 of the Act; or - 2 the accounts do not accord with those records.
