The Trustees present their report and Financial statements for the year ended 30th April 2021
STATEMENT OF TRUSTEES RESPONSIBILITIES
Charity law requires the Trustees to prepare statements of accounts for each financial year, which gives a trus and fair view of the affairs of the charity and its incoming resources and applicatons of resources for that period. In preparing those financia; statements the Trustees are required:-

select suitablle accounting policies and apply them consistently;

make judgements and estimates that are responsible and prident;
-
prepare financial statements on a going concern basis
-
value assets and liabilities in accordance with the Statement of Recommended Practice Accounting for Charities.
The Trustees are responsible for keeping proper accounting records which are sufficient to show and explain the Charities actvities and to disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the Charity, and to enable them to ensure any statement of account comply with the requirements of the Charity (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 1995. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charity and hence taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.
REFERENCE AND ADMINISTRATIVE DETAILS
The Charity was established by a Deed of Trust dated 18th Februaary 1991. It is a registered charity number 1004278.
The adminstration address is 4 Rosegate, Aglinby, Carlisle CA4 8AJ

The appointment of new Trustees come through recommendation for any existing Trustee and will be ratified by unanimous agreement. The new Trustee would go through an induction period and would likey to have known about the work of Bethany Hospital, Thana, Mumbia and its outreach work in India through a visit.

REVIEW OF THE YEAR
The object of the charity is to provide education, relief the poor and suffering and to provide medical and surgical relief work. The support for this work comes mainly from Individuals, Churches and Charitable Foundations who have heard of the needs in India, often receiving verbal reports from the Trustees or Dr Stephen Alfred during his visits The object of the charity is to provide education, relief the poor and suffering and to The object of the charity is to provide education, relief the poor and suffering and to the United Kingdom
In support of this work, legacies and gifts amounting to £160,586 were received during the year. The Trustees continue to be grateful to Dr Alfred and his wife Claire for their tireless and sacrificial leadership and work.
Bethany Hospital is a 200 bed hospital in Thane, on the outskirts of Mumbai, India. It was established in 1997 with a vision to provide quality healthcare, catering especially to the sections of the community who would otherwise find these services beyond their means. In normal times managing a hospital of this size is never easy. In March 2020 it was faced with the unprecedented Covid-19 crises. With days, one of the buildings was set apart as a dedicated Covid-19 centre. Starting with a 15 bed ICU unit and 45 ward beds. This quickly had to be scaled up to 75 beds, the maximum number the building could take.
Thane is a suburb of Mumbai with a population of five million people. Over night we were faced with score of Covid positive patients, who along with tens of thousands of migrants were unable to go back to their villages and were stranded in the streets and in the slums of Thane. Business closes and the City went into lockdown.
In addition to this, those working in the Covid unit had to isolate from non-covid staff. This required arranging accommodation for more than 100 staff. Two local schools came to the rescue and provided their premises for a make-shift hostel. Food being provided by local caterers. With staff becoming infected and going into isolation, immense pressure was put on the already deplored staff.
At any given time the hospital had 10 patients on ventilators. In the period April 2020 to April 2021, more than 2800 Covid-19 patients have been treated as inpatients. In addition around 3,500 as outpatients. Of these 96% recovered and were discharged. The mortality rates was 3.7% and the number of patients screened for coronavirus symptoms to 30th April 2021 is over 96,500. In the same period 8,910 non covid patients were admitted for treatment along with 78,000 outpatients. Surgery numbers were 1764.
These were unchartered waters for the hospital, both medically and administratively. Thane and Mumbai being among the most Covid affected areas in India, putting unrelenting pressure on the hospital with the Municipal authorities requiring more beds to be made available. Non-covid work continued to function with emergency laparotomies, surgeries and deliveries. The radiation therapy department seeing about 70 patients each day and the chemotherapy screening as per protocol.

To keep the hospital running under such extraordinary circumstances required an above normal flow of funds. The hospital incurred a substantial increase in operating costs and expensive, particularly in the Covid wards. The reasons for these increased costs; barrier nursing, use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and staff working shorter shifts due to the pressure working in these conditions.
It is anticipated that the Covid wards will remain open for a further twelve months, by which time it and hoped and praying that the pandemic will have run its course. The challenge now is dealing with many non-covid cases.
In the radiotherapy unit 840 patients have finished their courses, dealing with different types of malignancies, mainly head, face and neck.
The community health projects at Dolkam and the surrounding villages continue to flourish as does the HIV/AIDS programme in the community in and around Thane.
As Trustees we endeavour to support the work at Bethany Hospital through Zoom calls and many emails on a monthly and at times weekly basis .
We are incredibly grateful for the generosity of Individuals, Churches and Foundations in their support. From the start, sensing God's calling we have considered this a work of faith and only God can truly provide the resources needed and the impact on people lives both physically and spiritually.
INCOME AND EXPENDITURE
In support of this work, legacies and gifts amounted to £160,586 and interest received and gift aid tax reclaimed making the total income for the year £178,475. Gift to India amounted to £237,353 of which £85,000 was sent specifically towards the Covid-19 costs.
The Funds at the year ended amounted to £229,684 compared with £515,387 at 30th April 2020.
The Trustees are confident that the reserves are more than sufficient for the functioning of the Charity.

Responsibilities and basis of report
As the charity's Trustees, you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 ("the Act"). I report in respect of my examintaion of the Trust's accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145 95) (b) of the Act.
Independent examiner's statement
I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:

1 Accounting records were not kept in respect of the Trust as required by section 130 of the Act; or
-
2 the accounts do not accord with those records.
I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be raeched.
