LEEDS DEC- GLOBAL LEARNING LEEDS ANNUAL REPORT FOR 2023-24 Leed Educating for a just and sustainable worfd Badge created by a Bramley St Peters pupil as part of Leeds DECS Agents of Change workshop

REPORT FROM THE CHAIR This year has been a good year for the centre with delivery and completion of several projects, development of new training and partnerships. Leeds DEC (Development Education Centre) was established, fully funded by Oxfarn, in the late1980s to raise awareness among teachers and learners around issues arising from the unequal 'development' in 'developing countries,. However, the term 'development' is problematic, holding the su99estion that there is one path to 'development' (often understood narrowly as economic development) and that a 'developed' destination is necessarily desirable. Also, the term 'development education, doesn't mean anything to most people and perhaps is suggestive to some of o 'problem over there,. So Leeds DEC is now renaming Itself as Global Learning Leeds. 'Global Learning, is more instantly understandable. Rather than suggestin9 that the focus is on a 'problem in 'developing countries, it focuses on learners, understanding of the complex and rapidly- changing world we live in. The name change is in line with our national network and other Global Learning centres across the country. The core staff working at Global Learning Leeds hos changed during the year. Hannah Langdana who, with Adam Ranson, has been at the heart of the or9anisation, has moved to another job. We would like to thank her for the enormous contribution she has made over her many years with us and are delighted thot we are not losing her completely os she is still able to work with us for one day a week. We are extremely lucky to be able to welcome Sarah Fishwick as her successor. Sarah has worked with us part-time for many years, and her prior knowledge of the organisation has enabled her to slip seamlessly into the new role. This annual report highlights the many different people from Leeds and beyond involved in and affected by the important work that Global Learning Leeds carries out. The success of this work has depended on the hard work of our staff and volunteers. The Trustees send many thanks to them, and to the other supportive partners who have worked with the Centre staff over the last year.

PROJECTS CLIMATE CURRICULUM FOR CLIMATE ACTION This Erasmus funded programme enabled partners in the UK, Ireland, Germany and Turkey to systematically ernbed teachin9 about Climate Change throughout their curriculum. It also enabled teachers in different year groups to audit schemes of work and plan new teaching activities covering agreed climate learning outcomes. The transnational team reviewed and adapted the Climate Curriculum which Global Learning Leeds created, to fit their national education contexts. The project culminated in a new updated primary phase Climato Curriculum Frameworl a guide on how to teach about climate change in a way that inspires hope and action, a toolkit with resources, and a website to disseminate to school networks in the 4 countries. 7 training and dissemination events were organised at St Matthews CE Primary, Beechwood Primaryi Shire Oak CE Primaryi Moor Allerton Hall Primaryi the national conference for the Consortium of DEC8 (CODEC) and the University of Leeds, to share the new resources. The project was completed in June 2023 and reached195 teachers across the 4 countries. This year the programme has brought together12 schools,16 classes and a link with 2 School Councils from demographically diverse schools in a year-long pro9ramme within the city, providing children the chance to broaden their perspectives about the lives of other people that they would not normally come into contact with. We have worked with Leeds Local Authority and Leeds Learning Alliance to promote the programme to more schools, including running a bite-size CPD for PHSCE teachers. Unlike almost all other advanced economies (including all the EU states), the UK government doesn't have a programme of support for global learning. We began a collaboration with other members of the Global Learning Network, DECS across the four UK nations and colleagues at UCL and Oxfam to develop a paper making the case for a new UK Global Learning Programme. The centre has continued to work with Leeds Learning Alliance and it's member organisations to promote global learning, including in creating the Eco-schools conference. Leeds Church Institute commissioned poet Hannah Stone to attend the Fairtrade and Climate Action school celebration to write a poem. 'Debra Dances, was the result of this, which was published in Leeds City Theology magazine. The centre was invited to run a workshop at the Fair-Trade International Symp08ium held at the University of Leeds in June 2023. In partnership with Jane Dickinson from the University of Leeds, a workshop was delivered on How can campaigners and academics engage with schools around Fair Trade and Sustainability: ideas on what works. The centre has provided a range of training, webinars, workshops and conferences for school pupils and teachers on Climate Change & Justice, Intercultural Understanding and other global themes. Alongside this, we have delivered projects on Climate Change, facilitated Schools Intercultural Linking, and developed new online course for Sixth Forms, Community & the Third Sector. Leeds DEC’s work was recognised with two awards at the Leeds Compassionate Cities awards in December 2023, and we are planning to develop our own Global Learning Awards in the coming year.

Financial review

The net expenditure of the year was £40,785 (Last year: £43,430)including net Loss of (£9,482) (Last year profit of £368) on unrestricted funds and net expenditure of £63,938 (Last year: £43,798) on restricted funds

Reserves policy

The reserves of the charity are composed of unrestricted funds. These funds are maintained at a sufficient level in order to allow the smooth operation of the charity's activities.

The trustees have reviewed the reserves policy and set an ultimate target to establish a financial reserve of unrestricted funds equivalent to approximately 6 month's total expenditure to cater for possible future contingencies and uncertainties together with the working capital requirements of projects where income is received in arrears. Total spending for 2023/24 was approximately £93,000 (Last year :£86,000) making the 6 month target £46,500. (Last year: £43,000)

Given the continuing uncertainties over the funding of GLOBAL LEARNING and the need to provide matched funding, the trustees have made a decision to invest a significant element of the reserves to provide an income to support some of the charities costs.
