TREKNOW VILLAGE HALL Treknow, Tintagel, Cornwall PL34 0EN Charity Registration Number 1003783

Trustees Report 2021-2022

Treknow Village Hall is situated in the centre of the village of Treknow near Tintagel, Cornwall. It will be celebrating its centenary in 2023.The charity has been set up for general charitable purposes to provide a building with safe space for the advancement of Arts, Culture, Recreation, Heritage and Science. The Governing document states that its charitable objects are a village hall for the use of the inhabitants of the village of Treknow in the Parish of Tintagel in the County of Cornwall without distinction of political, religious or other opinions. It can be used for meetings, lectures, and classes and for other forms of recreation and leisure time occupation with the object of improving the conditions of life for the said inhabitants.

Treknow Village Hall is run by a Management Committee and for many years successive committees ran the hall efficiently but by the end of 2020 interest in the hall had waned until there was only one committee member and one Trustee who wished to stand down. There was a distinct possibility that the hall would have to close and be sold.

This situation spurred a small number of inhabitants to form a new committee and find four new Trustees with the intention of refurbishing the hall and injecting new ideas into the activities offered.

A Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer were elected at an online meeting in January 2021 when the running of the hall was passed to the new committee. A fifth Trustee was elected in 2021 and two more in March 2022 making seven in total.

The fabric of the building was sound but the interior, especially the kitchen, was below standard. The aims of the Trustees were to gradually refurbish the building as funds allowed.

The original meeting took place during the pandemic when social distancing was in use but by careful consideration of the rules the work was able to start.

During the next year the kitchen was replaced, the floor in the main hall was treated for wood worm, sanded and sealed. A team of over twenty volunteers decorated the hall inside and out. A large tree which was filling the gutters with debris and was likely to damage the roof was felled and the gardens laid to grass and flowerbeds. Railings were installed along the frontage with the road making the area safe for young children. The heating was replaced with air to air source heat pumps and

the new double glazed porch doors help to retain the heat in the main hall.

Bifold doors stand between the two halls and the small hall has had a new carpet. New floor coverings have been put in the kitchen and both toilets. The work is now complete and various groups have been using the hall, Yoga, Garden Club, Treknowans, Sound Meditation, and Fundraising sales have been taking place. There is a bring and borrow library in the porch which is also in use.

The official opening of the hall which had been postponed twice finally took place in early March and was attended by over eighty people. There was a lot of interest in the suggestions for activities put forward by the committee and further ideas were offered by those attending.

The Hall ends the financial year in a strong position. There have been three main streams of income during the last fifteen months, donations in memory of one of the original instigators of forming a new committee, donations from the public for the refurbishment of the building and Covid Business Support grants from the government to help during the pandemic. There has also been some fundraising sales held and at the end of March 2022 the credit balance going forward was £12,420. The generosity of local people and trades men who gave their labour free has been overwhelming and the Trustees hope that the refurbished building will be used by the community for family celebrations, parties, wedding receptions and be a place where people of all ages will find relaxation, stimulation and entertainment.
