CHAIRMAN'S REPORT
On Wednesday 29th November 2023, Northampton Community Foundation
held their Annual Awards Evening for the charitable sector operating within
Northamptonshire. The venue for the occasion was held at the Theatre Royal
and the event was well attended. During the evening all the winning charities
showed a video clip of their activities and were then presented with their
awards by a local dignitary.
The final award was for the "Avon Inspirational Woman of the Yearf, and ten
candidates had been submitted for consideration.
What a joyful moment it was when our own Pat Manchester was announced
as the winner. The citation mentioned the 47 years that Pat had been involved
with Daventry Contact from its fonnation in 1976 to present day.
The charity started as one of the projects envisioned by the Daventry Council
of Churches as part of many "Good Neighbour Schemes"
Pat and Diane Forrester controlled the collection and delivery of fumiture from
their homes by phone, recruiting volunteer drivers. obtaining the provision of
free transport from Roger Allen at Carental, and operating a "just in time"
collection - delivery service to anyone in need. The charity progressed by
obtaining free rental of two council garages which enabled the storage of
goods to take place (not ideal with leaky roofs and difficulty with accessing
furniture).
We are absolutely thrilled that Pat's long term commitment to Daventry
Contact over so many years has been recognised in our community- well
done and many congratulations Pat !

Another milestone this past year was the formation of a Daventry Men's Shed
which operates within one of our workshops. Men's Shed (and also
Community Sheds with ladies present) is a national organisation which
encourages men to socialise and be creative in their retirement years. Our
workshop was completely refurbished with painting done by the employees of
our local company Cummins. The floor was re-screeded and sealed with an
epoxy protective coating.
The closure of a woodworking facility in Northampton enabled the new
workshop to be fully kitted out with a pillar drill, bandsaw, tool cabinets,
sawdust extraction equipmenuducting and work benches.
Two of the Shed's members are repairing bicycles collected from the police
force and selling them to raise funds. Repaired bikes are also being given
away to schools in the local villages where the school bus services have
ceased.
It is now possible for extra furniture to be repaired for reuse. It is envisioned
that four half day sessions will be active in the near future with a maximum of
15 persons per session.
Our newly refurblshed
workshop

Now that the kitchen has been totslly refurbished, I would like to thank all the
companies which have donated goods and services.
Bosch Siemens- new refrigerator
Vaillant- new gas boiler
Howdens- units + work surface
Triton- under sink heater
Mill Floorlng - vlnyl floor + Installatlon
Elite Woodworking - cutting worktop
Xanadox Technologles Ltd- tlles and
painting.
Over the past 48 years so many people have contributed to the successful
operation of Daventry Contact. My sincere thanks go to all the staff,
volunteers and trustees both past and present.
So many people have been generous in donating quality furniture, white
goods and household effects from within our community that many needy
people have been blessed with goods which have contributed to making their
homes more pleasant to live in.
l also need to thank West Northants Council and all the Charitable Trusts and
Foundations (listed on Page 7) who have funded us on a regular basis to
enable us to pay the staff wages, maintain the building and run the two vans.
Two thirds of our funding comes from these generous trusts and foundations.
All of us involved with Daventry Contact are always uplifted and encouraged
when we receive heartfelt thanks from those whom we have helped. Kristen
has supplied just one such testimonial which I now share with you.
"A family appmached us directly. Since the parents did not speak English, the
teenage daughters acted as interpreters during our conversations.
It transpired that the family of 5 were from London. After a house fire took
everything they owned. they managed to find temporary accommodation in
Daventry. They were very grateful for this housing. but had no family. friends
or means of support in the local area.
The young son had found Daventry Contact on line and so they appmached us
to seek our help.

We heard how the family had been sleeping on their sofas, covered only with
their coats. which meant they hadn't been sleeping well at all. We were able to
provide the family with a double bed and 3 single beds, as well as pillows,
duvets and duvet cover sets, which we delivered that same day.
The mother and two of the children returned the next day to thank us. The
mother was unable to express her gratitude directly. because of the language
barrier. but her daughter translated her words. She said that the beds had
made such a difference to them, and that getting a good night's sleep had
helped the family to feel better and more equipped to deal with their difficult
experience. She also said that our friendliness and eagerness to help had
given them renewed confidence for the future, and that they looked fonvard to
returning to London once they found alternative permanent accommodation.
The young boy, who was missing his home, but pleased to have a few weeks
off school, told us that he had been very cold sleeping under his coat, but that
his new duvet was "bare cosy"
When the family returned to London 6 weeks later, we collected the beds,
which would then go on to help another family. The family opted to keep
smaller items, so that they could use them in their new home."
Our motivation comes from the Lord Jesus who instructs His followers 'to
love our neighbours as ourselves" The apostle Paul also instructed his
followers to "never grow tired of doing good. '
Bless you all,
In His Service

they are then cleaned by our team before being redistributed. Thank you to Bill and the team for
this important aspect of our work.
