CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

As chairman of Daventry Contact for many years, I have always been blessed with the support, friendship and fellowship of my fellow trustees. It is therefore sad to accept the retirement of Keith Hiscock from the trusteeship. Keith has served Daventry Contact for 25 years and was invited to join as a trustee by our late secretary Ron Wilson. Ron recognised that Keith’s background as a Deputy Director of Social Services would be invaluable in our liaison with with Daventry Social Services when we applied for a Mental Illness Specific Grant to enable employment for trainees with learning disability to take place. Keith also served for 12 years as a director of Spurgeons , the national charity, working with vulnerable families, children and young people.

Keith will be greatly missed in his role of HR & Safeguarding and at our AGMs when he opened our meetings with “his thought for the day” – Keith would display a piece of furniture or household effect, followed by a talk with a spiritual message for the meeting to contemplate before the opening prayer.

Keith Hiscock

Keith, on behalf of the trustees, staff and volunteers, we wish both you and Anthea every blessing in your new home in Wellington. Thank you so much for your commitment, service and devotion to Daventry Contact over the past 25 years.

This past year has been challenging in various ways. We have now occupied our building for over 40 years and it is at the age when many parts are beginning to need attention. Our old fluorescent lighting has mostly been replaced with brighter and more economical LED lights. However, not all areas in the roof space have been finished because of water leaks from the seals in the old asbestos roofing. The cost of replacing the roof is prohibitively high and so we are trying to seal the leaks with a compound protected from the sunlight with a reflective paint. Asbestos is also present in the loose floor tiles and artex ceilings of the kitchens and toilets which we are addressing room by room.

We are also experiencing maintenance problems with our Luton Transit van , now over 11 years old, and hence we decided to launch our new van fund with a view to replace this vehicle in the near future.

2

In order to raise extra funds we started to reinstate our local Grand Sale which was discontinued some years ago. This was held at the Saxon Suite within the Daventry Leisure Centre. Daventry is an ever expanding town and we were aware that we needed to create awareness of our presence and services to the newcomers.

Staff and volunteers at the Grand Sale at the Saxon Suite – Daventry Leisure Centre

I want to thank all the charitable trusts and foundations (listed on page 8) who have supported us financially this year. It is really encouraging when some members of these trusts come to visit us. One such visit resulted in extra funding for us to supply brand new pillows and bedding sets for children to enhance the “feel good” experience of having been given items that were brand new.

Also we wish to thank BSH Home Appliances based in Milton Keynes for regular donations of white goods surplus to requirements.

Another surprise visit was our local MP Chris Heaton-Harris who attended our last AGM in October accompanied by two armed minders (Chris holds the post of Northern Ireland Secretary !).

Whenever we make collections or deliveries, we invite all to complete a Satisfaction Survey. Over the past year 93% of our contacts have rated our service as excellent.

Among the thanks we receive I want to show a quote from an email which Kristen our Administrator received after a delivery.(who also made a financial donation).

“I am so grateful for your help and support through a very hard time. Me and my son are doing well since being given a home and being made homeless last year and me having to give up my job to care for my son who is autistic. I just wish that I could give more. I hope you don’t mind but I have put a message on Daventry Notice Board to let everyone know how grateful and how hard you work to help others in need. You truly are wonderful people and thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”

3

Also a mother with two young children fled domestic violence and started again from scratch. Her pre-teen son missed his games console so the council asked if we could help. We didn’t have any in stock, but Kristen put an appeal on Facebook. A young gentleman donated an X-Box with accessories. Realising he had no games suitable for a young child, he went out and spent his own money buying age-appropriate games for the child.

During the year the trustees voted on a proposal to allow a Men’s Shed (or Community Shed) to form and operate from the Daventry Contact premises using the two workshops. A committee has been formed and a volunteer manager has been appointed. A constitution has been formed and a bank account is in the process of being opened. It is hoped that this facility will be up and running very soon offering a social and creative outlet for many who are retired in our community.

So finally I wish to thank all our trustees, staff and volunteers for their commitment and enthusiasm which they display in serving our local community.

I am reminded of the Bible verse in St. Paul’s letter to the Colossian church (Ch 3 v 23).

“Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men” (NASB)

I pray that this verse resonates with all who are associated with Daventry Contact.

Bless you all, In His Service
