CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

I recently enjoyed a visit to the Silverstone Museum located only a few miles from Daventry. On display were the Formula 1 cars from yesteryear and all the technology that goes into the Formula 1 cars of today. It is amazing that Formula 1 is an industry that not only hosts all the F1 teams in the U.K. but also encompasses the activities of approx. 3500 support companies. Formula 1 is obviously a very successful business providing many jobs and contributing to many technical advancements in engineering.

During the tour I pondered one of the sayings of Colin Chapman, the founder of Lotus Racing Cars, displayed on one of the information boards.

“There are only four parameters which control a racing car. One is the power from the engine. The second is the aerodynamic download it can produce. The third is the amount of grip which can be obtained by the tyres And the fourth is the weight.”

So as I was preparing to write my Chairman’s Report this year, I reflected on the four parameters which have made Daventry Contact a successful charity for over forty years.

Firstly we have always been blessed with dedicated staff who strive to help those in need within our local community. This starts with a phone call from a member of the public who advises us that good quality furniture, white goods and household effects can be collected for possible reuse. The collection could involve just one item which is being replaced with new or it could involve a complete house clearance because a relative has passed away. Another phone call will be from a desperate person or family who have had to relocate due to unforeseen circumstances to accommodation with no furniture within.

Our staff will always go the extra mile to provide what is needed to make the transition as stress free as possible – perhaps providing a food parcel or just some TLC (tender loving care).

Secondly in my role as Chairman I want to recognise the work and commitment of my fellow trustees who attend regular meetings and visits to ensure the smooth running of the administrative, compliance, HR and regulatory requirements and responsibilities of the charity.

Thirdly I want to thank all the volunteers who contribute in many different ways to the smooth running of the charity in whatever capacity.

Fourthly we could not function without the generosity of the many Charitable Trusts and Foundations who support us financially, and the general public who contribute quality items for reuse.

So how do I know that Daventry Contact makes a difference to people’s lives and wellbeing ? Here are three recent case histories of need within our local community which I would like to highlight.

2

Collection of white goods and furniture

Deliveries with the help from our many volunteers

(1). A recent recipient of furniture items, a young working man, said that he had felt embarrassed about his living situation. He had not wanted friends to visit his flat because he did not want them to know that he was sleeping on an old sofa and did not have a fridge or other basic items. After receiving the delivery, he phoned to thank the charity and to express that he was looking forward to having friends round once the covid restrictions were lifted. He said that he now felt “normal”. Having furniture and a fridge had improved his confidence and self image and he now feels confident for the future.

(2). Another recipient, an elderly man in a small flat, sent a postcard to express his thanks. He had phoned to ask if we could help with blankets because it was cold at night. In chatting to him about the blankets, it became apparent that he had been sleeping on the floor, with blankets under him and over him. We were able to deliver him a bed with duvet, bedding and blankets. We were also able to provide some pots and pans so that he could cook more easily. These simple items made a real difference to his life.

3

(3). A women who had fled domestic violence with her young daughter and had now been housed left a voice message on the day that she received a large delivery. She said, “Thank you so much for your help. I don’t know how to repay you. Thank you sooo much. Everything looks great.”

I would also like to share the contents of two thank-you cards received recently.

(4). “Just to say a very big thank you to both yourself and the team at Daventry Contact. Your kindness and patience, I can only say it’s made all the difference to me, in the darkest of times.”

(5). “Thank you for all the help you have given my family. We are extremely grateful for all the things you have given us to make this place feel more like a home. I’m also massively grateful to you for listening to all my worries and problems. It has meant so much because I have nobody in my life to talk to; you have been a life saver. Never forget how much you change people’s lives.”

As I departed from the Silverstone Museum, I suddenly reflected that Colin Chapman had missed out one vitally important parameter from his memorable quote. Surely the skills and motivation of the driver behind the wheel of the racing car should be recognised to be of paramount importance.

And so it is with Daventry Contact as well. The motivation behind all who are associated with Daventry Contact is our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Jesus answered one of the teachers of the Law who had asked Him “Which is the greatest commandment ?” . Jesus replied “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it. Love your neighbour as yourself.” (Matthew 22 v 36 – 40).

May we always be ready to do likewise.

May the Lord bless you all

The financial statements have been prepared to give a ‘true and fair’ view and have departed from the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 only to the extent required to provide a ‘true and fair view’. This departure has involved following the Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) issued in October 2019.

The financial statements are prepared on a going concern basis under the historical cost convention, modified to include certain items at fair value. The financial statements are presented in sterling which is the functional currency of the charity.

The significant accounting policies applied in the preparation of these financial statements are set out below. These policies have been consistently applied to all years presented unless otherwise stated.

Tangible fixed assets and depreciation

Tangible fixed assets are initially measured at cost and subsequently measured at cost or valuation, net of depreciation and any impairment losses.

Depreciation on fixed assets is provided on the reducing balance basis at a rate estimated to write off the cost, less estimated residual value, of each asset over its expected useful life at the following rates per annum.

Motor Vehicles 25% Fittings & Equipment 25%

Following the revaluation in the year to 31 March 2006, no depreciation has been provided on the freehold property as the Trustees consider that the market value is greater than that valuation.
