Introduction** ## **1.1 Charitable Objects** The object of the Trust as set out in the Trust Deed dated 13[th] February 1991 as amended on 5[th] October 2018 is to advance the education of pupils at Acland Burghley Comprehensive School (“the School”). The Trustees have the power to pay or apply any part or parts of the income or capital towards providing and assisting in the provision of facilities for the education at the school (not normally provided by the local education authority), and to engage in activities which support the School and advance the education of pupils attending it. ## **1.2 Overview** The focus of the Trust during the year 1 April 2023 to 31 March 2024 has been to continue its fundraising activities in support of the School’s plan to refurbish and improve its Grade II listed school hall, restoring it to its original high standard performance space. ## **2. Activities & Achievements** ## **2.1 Outputs & Outcomes** The Trust has continued to work closely with the School in its plan to raise £1.875M to refurbish the school hall (‘Hall for All’ campaign). The majority of activity has been to further develop and refine the fundraising strategy and to produce assets in support of the Hall for All fundraising campaign. This has included a fundraising brochure, a fundraising website for the campaign, as well as the production of a short film. The Trust provided funding for the security for the Hall for All fundraising event in March 2024, ‘Still Got it’ disco, as well as £2,975 fees to a consultant assisting the School in its preparation of its application for National Lottery funding. The Trust has worked closely with other Hall for All stakeholders including the Acland Burghley School, the Acland Burghley School Parents Association, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment (resident orchestra at Acland Burghley School, Registered Charity No. 295329), the Hall for All Community Board, and the Museum for Brutalist Architecture (MoBA), all of whom are involved in some way in the development and delivery of the Hall for All campaign. Individual trustees have continued to build and develop relationships with potential donors and stakeholders (corporate and individual), in aid of the Hall for All campaign. Outside of the Hall for All campaign, the Trust was delighted to receive a donation of £5,000 to replace the school pianos. In January of this year the Trust opened an investment account with Flagstone Investment Platform. This has enabled the Trust to place short term deposits at a higher interest rate than that provided by the Charity’s bank, CAF (Charities Aid Foundation Bank Limited). ## **2.2 Policies on Grant-Making** The Trust consults the School on its educational priorities in terms of facilities and activities for pupils, so as to ensure that the activities of the Trust are aligned with the needs of the School. Where reserved funds have been received the Trust liaises with the School on projected timelines and the sums required, enabling such funds to be invested appropriately. ## **2.3 The Roles & Contributions of Volunteers** The Trust does not directly engage or manage any volunteers, and is highly dependent on its small group of trustees who undertake voluntary work to support the work of the Charity, amounting to one day per week per trustee. _Acland Burghley School Trust: Trustees’ Annual Report & Financial Statements_ _Page 16 of 16_ Other volunteers undertaking any work in furtherance of the Charity’s objectives, are made available through the School, its parent community, and the Acland Burghley School Parent Teachers Association. The Trust is very grateful in particular to the individual parents who have led and managed specific fundraising events and activities in support of the refurbishment of the school hall. ## **2.6 Looking Ahead** The Trust will continue its focus on raising funds for the refurbishment of the school hall. The school’s fundraising target is £1.875M, with construction target start date of June 2025. ## **3. Financial Review** ## **3.1 Financial Position** In the financial year 2023-2024 income was £49,910 and expenditure was £9,576. Net assets year end was £328,060. ## **3.2 Details of Any Funds Materially in Deficit** The Trust has no funds which are materially in deficit. ## **3.3 Policy on Reserves** The Charity’s policy on reserves is to retain a minimum of £15,000 in easily realisable assets sufficient to meet its short-term expenditure plans. ## **3.4 Going Concern** There are no uncertainties about the Trust continuing as a going concern. ## **3.5 Principal Sources of Funding and Expenditure** General Fund income (£10,050) is derived mainly from individual ad hoc and regular donations with the remainder from gift aid, online shopping and interest. Reserved fund income and expenditure summary is set out below: Assembly Hall – a primary campaign to return the Grade 2 brutalist school hall to its original high standard performance space. Total income this year was £30,466. Major individual donors donated a total of £12,000, and £10,000 was granted by the Hollick Family Foundation. The ‘You still got it’ disco organised by School parents raised £5,6239, with remaining income from smaller individual giving. Expenditure was £3,395: £420 expenses and £2,975 fees to a consultant assisting the School in its preparation of its application for National Lottery funding. Acland Burghley Better Spaces – a legacy campaign that aims to create a healthier school environment for students. This year’s income from individual donations was £144. Horne Foundation – in the 2022-2023 year the Horne Foundation donated £200,000 to fund free or subsidised tickets to live arts events or performances for students who are disadvantaged (those qualifying for free school meals now or at any time in the last 6 years); and £25,000 for building/refurbishment work of the drama/dance/music practice rooms. These sums have been invested in a fixed term (12 – 18 months) account (Flagstone Group Ltd charitable account). Pianos – an individual donation of £5,000 to replace the existing school pianos (the school was granted this sum following the purchase of two pianos). _Acland Burghley School Trust: Trustees’ Annual Report & Financial Statements_ _Page 16 of 16_ ## **3.6 Investments Policy & Objectives** The Trust has an Investment Policy. The financial objective of its investments is to generate a sustainable return to help deliver the objects of the charity. The overall investment objective is to produce best financial return with an acceptable level of risk. Investments will be ethical and we do not invest in the tobacco industry, armaments, gambling, pornography and other industries as specified by the trustees ## **3.7 Description of the Principal Risks Facing the Charity** The principal risk facing the Trust is in respect of our fixed and short-term investments, inflation and fall in capital values and fall in value or failure of specific investment vehicles, mitigated through medium or low risk investments and spreading risk over a number of investment options. ## **3.8 Remuneration of Trustees** All Trustees act in a voluntary capacity and receive no remuneration or other material benefits from their services to the Charity. Out-of-pocket expenses necessarily and reasonably incurred by Trustees in promoting the purposes of the Trust are reimbursed at cost. ## **4. (i) Provide and assist in the provision of facilities for the education of the school (not normally provided by the local education authority) (ii) Engage in activities which support the school and advance the education of pupils attending it. ## **5.3 Statutory Declaration** The Trustees confirm that they have paid due regard to the guidance issued by the Trust Commission on public benefit in deciding what activities the Trust should undertake. ## **5.4 Trustee Selection Methods** There must be at least three charity trustees. In accordance with the Trust Deed, three Trustees are nominated for a term of one year from the School, The School’s Parent Teachers Association, and the School’s Governing Body. Appointed Trustees have a term of three years and in appointing due regard is given to the skills, knowledge and experience needed for the effective administration of the Trust. ## **5.5 Trustee Development** Upon appointment or nomination, all trustees are inducted by an experienced trustee and receive a copy of the Trust Deed, minutes from the previous 12 months, most recent accounts and annual report, and Charity Commission guidance on being a trustee. During the year a number of trustees also attended an online Getting on Board training event ‘The Onboarding: induction training for newly appointed Trustees’.
