## **Chair’s Report 2021 -2022**

Covid-19 is still very much a feature of life this year and continues to affect how we operate.

The continuation and growth of the vaccine programme has helped the return to some measure of normality. Nonetheless, at the time of writing, highly infectious variants still put people in hospital, and it seems that ‘herd immunity’ will take time to become a reality.

We continue to take advantage of online platforms to deliver services, and online meetings with our colleagues, both in the sector and the wider community, have become the norm.

During this period of uncertainty, demand for our services has continued to increase, and the impending cost-of-living crisis has put even more pressure on women and their families.

,

More than ever this year, I need to thank the entire EWC team for their unstinting efforts on behalf of our clients. For all they do in supporting the vital work of the organisation, I would also like to thank my colleagues on the Management Committee.

Barbara Le Fevre Chair

## **Treasurer’s Report**

The current pandemic has mean that we have not had the ability to raise funds locally, with no local events being organised. We have also lost income from face-to-face activities; although small, they were a help.

We are exploring online fundraising; this is a resource issue as our tiny team already are at full stretch. A small sub-group is considering launching a series of appeals for various activities and items whilst remembering those who use our services struggle themselves.

The Team continues to meet challenges creatively and cheerfully using our scarce resources to the best of their ability. I am in constant awe of this ability of theirs.

Thank you all very much for your humour, hard work, dedication and support.

B J Woods - Treasurer

## **Centre Directors Report**

What to say that would be different about a small group of people working to provide support services to those in most need. As always, the team have been magnificent coming in to respond to the urgent needs of women who need our support. Despite still providing services online we have a steady stream of women and their families arriving at our door seeking help; food, housing advice, needing to escape a violent situation, access to info on benefits, etc.

It has been a difficult time, balancing the needs of the team to stay safe and the needs of our clients to access support. Funding bids have been sent off and we have news that some of these have been favourably viewed. More info on those next time.

Ginnie Landon - Centre Director (Voluntary)

## **Counselling** -

Counselling has continued online throughout the year. We have recruited more counsellors and have been able to increase the number of counsellors speaking community languages.

As with last year, the number of referrals and, in particular, via NHS IAPT and Domestic Violence professionals in all sectors, continues very high.

As more areas of life return to normal, we hope to be able to offer clients the choice of faceto-face or remote sessions.

## **Freedom Programme**

The Freedom Programme also continued successfully online, with referrals continuing to increase. Referrals come from LBE Social Services, GPs, hospitals, counsellors, schools and community and voluntary organisations. Women are also able to self-refer. We run three courses per year, one each term. We are always oversubscribed for these courses.

The Freedom Programme examines the roles played by attitudes and beliefs on the actions of abusive men and the responses of victims and survivors. The aim is to help them to make sense of and understand what has happened to them, and to move on to abuse-free lives.

## **Coffee mornings**

Online coffee mornings continue. There is still a significant amount of concern about Coronavirus and now people are discussing how Long Covid is affecting them and their loved ones. We are collecting information on what works for people to share with others. These sessions are held weekly throughout the year, but we have noticed that numbers decline during school holidays. Wea re looking at options for an online activity which might include children.

## **Food Distribution project**

Sainsbury stores on the A10 and Lancaster Road collect donations for the women we serve. Since joining the Food Alliance, our referrals have increased and we are operating two delivery rounds and pick-ups each week, one in the North and one in the South of the Borough. Many of the women need help on various issues and we offer courses on Money Management, access to advice completing forms for various benefits, etc., housing help – some women are facing no fault evictions.

## **Connecting Enfield Women**

As a response to the high levels of outrage following the murder of Sarah Everard, women in Enfield, led by Councillor Kate Anolue, and supported by Enfield Saheli and Enfield Women’s Centre, came together for support and to explore how we might work together to combat issues of extreme misogyny and support each other.

Women’s groups and individuals were invited to participate to find out more, and potentially continue to be part of the process to explore this further.

Meetings have been held online to consider a way forward and Terms of Reference were agreed. Plans for various activities including a conference are to be drawn up. It has been agreed that Enfield Women’s Centre will support this initiative with admin and other services as needed.

## **White Ribbon Day 2021**

We continue to support and promote the White Ribbon campaign. We held our annual vigil for women and girls who had been attacked and killed around the world. As in last year, this was an online event due to the Coronavirus concerns. It was good to be joined by women from the community and also the statutory sector.

## **Acknowledgements**

Once again it is time to thank people for their help, support, donations and encouragement in enabling us to carry out the activities of the Centre. We have to repeat that thanking everyone who has helped and supported us is a challenge each year in that we are always conscious that we may miss someone important. So - **thank you** to all who have helped, supported and encouraged us and apologies if you have been missed in the comments below. Do please contact us to enable us to rectify the situation.

We continue to thank staff and customers at **Sainsbury** for their wonderful support for our families via the donation boxes in their stores. This continued high-profile support has really helped and we have had individuals contact us to bring us supplies direct having seen the Sainsbury boxes. This food and other necessary items are invaluable in supporting the families who are referred to us.

**Edmonton Rotary Club** for their much appreciate continued support for our clients. They delighted our families with a huge donation of candy covered chocolate buttons which we packaged up as gifts. The families loved these as we added them to the Christmas Hampers.

Once again, the people of Enfield came together to ensure we were able to bring some light to our families over the Christmas period with turkeys, hampers and gifts. These included Pastor Nick and the Revival Christian Church of Enfield and a year-long supply of food donations as well as ready meals from Tara at Exodus Youth Worx UK.

Melanie Tadhunter of the British Darts Foundation who again donated a stunning amount of toys and other gifts for children.

We are always grateful for the help and support from the Community Development Team at the Civic, Shaun Rogan, Debbie Gates, Jany Badoye. Their prompt responses to our varying queries have helped a tremendous amount.

Louise Nicholson is due a massive vote of thanks for her continued support with our website. We often rush off emails with requests for amendments and she responds immediately helping us to promote our work.

**Paul at Selman Print** – thanks for your rapid responses to our crazy requests.

**Enfield Voluntary Action** – for their invaluable support and information on a range of issues. The various fora they provide for community groups to come together to discuss concerns is invaluable.

Thank you to all our **members and individual** donors – without your support we would not be here. We also recognise that for some of you this is a big deal.

We again owe a debt of gratitude to Paul for carrying out deliveries of food to our families needing foodbank services.

Again – working with this dedicated team is a privilege, one for which I am truly grateful. So, thank you to all the Team and the Trustees for keeping the focus in these unfocussed times.
