Coleridge Families Annual Report and Accounts 2021-2022

Trustees’ Annual Report for the period

From 01 October 2021 To 30 September 2022

Charity name: Coleridge Families

Charity registration number: 1001997

Objectives and Activities

SORP reference
Summary of the purposes of
the charity as set out in its
governing document
Para 1.17 The objective of Coleridge Families is to
advance the education of the pupils of
Coleridge Primary School in the London
Borough of Haringey by providing and
assisting in the provision of facilities for
education at the school (not normally
provided by the Education Authority).
As an ancillary thereto and in furtherance of
this object Coleridge Families may:
A) encourage co-operation between the
staff, parents and all others associated with
the school;
B) engage in activities (including fund-
raising activities) which support the school
and advance the education of the pupils
attending it; and
C) encourage parents to be interested in
the education of their children and the
activities of the school.
Summary of the main
activities in relation to those
purposes for the public
benefit, in particular, the
activities, projects or
services identified in the
accounts.
Para 1.17 and
1.19
Several events and projects took place
throughout the year, as more in-person
events became possible again after the
COVID pandemic including:

Fireworks Night

Summer Fair

Book Swap Festival

Silent Auction

Christmas Card Project

Christmas Puddings

The Coleridge Storybook

Cake sales to raise money for Red
Cross and victims of war in Ukraine
Money was spent on particular projects
identified in collaboration with the school,

1

including reading corners, book bags and
an allotment project.
Coleridge Families collects donations via
the Coleridge Voluntary Fund, which is
passed directly to the school with Gift Aid
claimed on donations where possible.
Coleridge Families sells merchandise,
some of which raises money specifically for
Year 6 activities (for example Leavers
Hoodies), and some of which contributes to
general funds raised.
Statement confirming
whether the trustees have
had regard to the guidance
issued by the Charity
Commission on public
benefit
Para 1.18 2021/2022 was another year of significant
donations by parent community towards the
Coleridge Voluntary Fund (CVF). We
received c. £54,500 in donations towards
that appeal. The amount, however, was
significantly down on previous year
(c.£99,300) due to many significant regular
donors have left the school, and the uptake
among new families was very low,
reflecting changing economic climate and
demographic of the school community.
Coleridge Families embarked on reviving
many well-loved community fundraising
events, starting with Coleridge Fireworks –
first whole school, in person event since the
pandemic. The event was very well
attended – with tickets being sold out. The
event raised c.£8,200.
School’s Christmas Play production faced
significant challenges that year due to
Covid outbreaks across many classes. The
performances managed to go ahead,
however many children ended up missing
out on their individual performance. We
think this had a significant impact on
School Play DVD/Download sales, which
were significantly down on previous years.
In early spring, as Covid restrictions were
easing again and in response to school’s
request for support, we launched our first
ever Reading Festival, culminating with a
Book Swap Event in late March and
publishing Coleridge Story Book. Although
the main purpose of the Reading Festival
was to help promote reading for pleasure
across the school, we also ran a
fundraising campaign alongside, raising
close to £7,000 towards new Reading
Corners in classrooms.

Coleridge Families Annual Report and Accounts 2021-2022

2022 saw the beginning of the war in Ukraine, many people within the school community were inclined to help and raise funds towards the victims of war in Ukraine and across other conflicts. Several cake sales took place in the spring of 2022, with CF providing operational support to parents leading those. They resulted in £1,800 being raised towards Red Cross and ICRC (Ukraine appeal). June saw first post-pandemic Summer Fair. The event was very well attended and raised c.£7,000 (excluding silent auction, which raised close to £6,000). It was the first event where CF introduced tokens as payment currency for games, drinks and food at the fair. Throughout the year CF remained committed to working in partnership with the School and the governing body, focusing on involvement and participation. All the events were very well attended. CF remained committed to supporting families that are less well off, by providing free tickets to events and tokens for activities for the children eligible to Free School Meals. Introduction of tokens in particular had a very positive effect on uptake and participation of families who might otherwise choose not to. Book Swap event was accessible to all, offering free workshops and books to all attending while focusing on promoting one of school’s key objectives for the year. The accounts presented in this report have been approved by the membership at an AGM held in February.

Contribution made by
volunteers
Para 1.38 Coleridge Families does not have any paid
employees. All the committee members are
volunteers, including the school’s Head
Teacher who acts in voluntary capacity for
Coleridge Families.
Events carried out in the year are staffed by
parents of children at the school who
volunteer their time. A network of class
representatives (Reps) also volunteer to
serve as a link between school and parents
via WhatsApp throughout the year.
Other Coleridge Families is a very inclusive PSA.
Involvement in event organisation is
encouraged by an allocation of 1
fundraising event to each year group.
The aims and ethos of CF as a parent-staff
association and registered charity is to
work in partnership with the School and
Governors towards a whole school
community with the key elements being
involvement and participation from all and
keeping all events accessible to all families.
It has as an equal aim fundraising to
provide the extras to advance the
education of the children by providing
facilities at the school that the Local
Authority does not normally provide.

Achievements and Performance

SORP reference
Summary of the main
achievements of the charity,
identifying the difference the
charity’s work has made to
the circumstances of its
beneficiaries and any wider
benefits to society as a
whole.
Para 1.20 What did the charity fund in 2021/2022
Coleridge Families (‘CF’) launched a
‘Reading Corners Appeal’ that ran
throughout the academic year. All the funds
raised during all major events that
academic year were raising money towards
that appeal. It resulted with £28,182 being
put aside towards purchasing new display
shelving and sitting areas for classrooms
alongside new books. The school
comprises of 28 classrooms across
Reception and Y6, plus Nursery and
Rainbow Class. The new books were
purchased by the school in June 2022, and
new reading corners for Y3 and Y4 were
ordered over the summer of 2022. With
more orders to follow next year.
To further promote reading across the
school community, CF ran its first

community festival – Book Swap in March
2022. The event focused on promoting
reading for pleasure, as well as writing
stories and poems. The Book Swap event
cost c. £900 which was covered by
donations on the day. We also launched
our first ever Story Book – put together for
Story and Poem competition, comprising
over 240 entries from Coleridge pupils. The
Story Book print costs were c.£4,000. Most
of the printing costs were recovered
through book sales, however, books were
offered at a discount to Families eligible for
Free School Meals, and we also
provisioned to supply classrooms with free
copies of the book.
CF purchased 26 fans for the school ahead
of the heatwave in the summer of 2022 at a
cost of £1,820.
CF also funded the creation of an allotment
within Y6 playground at a cost of £1,743.
As in previous years CF funded book bags
for Reception children (£767) and
Christmas gifts (for all the Nursery to Y2
children) and parties (supplied food and
drink to all the Year groups, cost £631)
CF funded outdoor materials for Reception
classes at a cost of £941.
Looking ahead, the charity has earmarked
c. £87,000 for specific grants to Coleridge
Primary School:
-
c. £8,600 towards Coleridge
Voluntary Fund (incl. Gift Aid)
-
c. £11,600 towards Learning
Enhancement Fund. These funds
will be deployed when needed to
fund areas of the School
Development Plan (SDP). Some
money will also be used to cover
essential school running costs, for
example educational resources and
premises costs. The Resources
Committee of the school’s
Governing Body will scrutinise
spending and will hold the Senior
Leadership Team to account,
ensuring that the fund is
appropriately spent to provide
maximum impact.
