Objectlves, membershlp and actlvltles
The maln objectlve of the Club as deflned In Its Constltutlon Is to promote, Improve, develop
and malntaln publlc educatlon In and appreclatlon of the art and sclence of muslc In all Its
aspects by the presentatlon of publlc concerts and recltals, by commlsslonlng new choral
works and by such other ways as the Club through Its Commlttee decldes. Thls Is prlnclpally
achleved through the actlvitles of the cholr whlch Is open to any actlve slnger In and around
Aldeburgh, without audltlon. An annual subscrlptlon Is charged for membershlp of the Club
and to cover the costs of weekly rehearsals and to contrlbute towards the perlodlc losses
incurred in performlng publlc concerts.
The Club arranges and performs concerts each year In Aldeburgh and the surrounding distrlct.
The programmes Include many of the great classlcal choral works and a wlde varlety of less
well-known works together wlth concertos and other orchestral works. Wherever
approprlate, the Club wlll employ local orchestras, young professlonal soloists and
Instrumentalists from East Anglla.
Publlc beneflt ststement
The trustees have complled wlth thelr statutory duty to have due regard to the Charity
Commisslon's guidance on publlc benefit when exerclslng thelr powers or dutles.
Revlew of the year
A full programme of actlvltles was undertaken In the year. In November, at Snape Maltings
Concert Hall, the Club along wlth the Suffolk Baroque Players put on a concert of baroque
muslc whlch Included Vlvaldl's Glorla and Handel's Dlxlt Oomlnus. The sololsts were all based
in Suffolk and Norfolk In keeplng with the Club's objectlves.
For the first time In recent years, a Chrlstmas concert was added to the programme and
Britten's 'A Ceremony of Carols, was performed at St BartholoMe￿S Church, Orford on a
Saturday afternoon In December. A further innovation in the cholrfs schedule was a Jolnt
concert with local school, Alde Valley Academy, held In the school hall In March. The
programme included songs connected wlth Shakespeare Interspersed with readings by the
students. The trustees hope to contlnue to bulld on thls relatlonship with the school in order
to support muslc studies In the currlculum and to foster the students, interest in classlcal
music. In June, back at Orford, the cholrfs flnal performance of the year was Brahms. German
Requiem accompanled by two planos.
In addition to the programme of concerts, the now tradltlonal carol slnglng on Aldeburgh
beach was ralned off at the last mlnute, but the cholr was pleased to move undercoverto sing
at the Aldeburgh Jubllee Hall's Chrlstmas Craft Falr.
Flnandal revlew
The accounts of the club are prepared on a recelpts and payments basls. The Recelpts and
Payments Account for the year ended 31 July 2024 shows a deflclt for the year of £73212023

£8,925). Whlle total recelpts of £45,816 have only fallen sllghtly slnce the prevlous year
(£47,055), total payments have reduced slgnlflcantly reflectlng the trustees, declslon to
control concert costs whlle concert audlences remaln stubbornly slow to return to pre-
pandemic levels.
Concert revenues were £20,210 (2023 - £20,888) compared wlth concert expenditure of
£27,654 (2023 - £36,297) resultlng In an overall loss on concerts of £7,444 (2022 - £15,409).
The outcome for 2024 Includes the results for four concerts compared with only three In the
previous year. A major part of concert expenditure relates to the hlre of muslclans and
soloists and the hire of venues, In particular Snape Maltlngs Concert Hall. For this reason, the
choir performs only one concert annually atsnape Instead of two, which was the custom prior
to the pandemic.
Membershlp subscrlptlons totalled £14,880 (2023 - £13,235) reflecting a small increase In
memebershlp and an Increase in the subscrlptlon of 7%. Patrons contrlbuted £8,200 (2023 -
£8,313). No gift ald was claimed durlng the year but glft ald In respert of subscriptions and
donatlons received In the year clalms are In progress. These subscriptions and glfts cover the
cost of the cholr's rehearsals and overheads and also help to underwrlte any concert losses.
Cash at the year end was £49,468 (2023 - £50,200).
All the expenses relate to charltable actlvltles.
The Club has sufflclent reserves to enable It to contlnue Its actlvlties although the trustees
have planned to control the costs of future concerts and other actlvltles whlle the fall In
audience numbers and consequently tlcket revenues contlnues.
Statement of pollry on reserves
Concert revenues are subject to many factors outslde the control of the trustees. The Club
plans the concert schedule up to three years In advance and may enter Into financial
commitments In relatlon tothose concerts. To enable the Club to do thls wlth confldence, the
trustees have a pollcy to malntaln sufflclent reserves to cover the anticlpated costs of these
actlvltles after taklng Into account expected revenues from other sources. Reserves at the
year end were £49,468 (2023- £50,200). All the reserves were unrestrlcted.
