The trustees for the year are elected from the Club's members at the Annual General Meeting. They hold office for one year or until the succeeding season's AGM and are eligible for reelection. The trustees constitute the Committee of the Club, which is responsible to the Charity Commission for the proper conduct of the Club's affairs. The Club is an unincorporated charitable organisation governed by its Documents of Constitution, approved by the Charity Commission and dated 20 September 1990, the latest update being 22 October 2019. 1 ## **Objectives, membership and activities** The main objective of the Club, as defined in its Constitution, is to promote, improve, develop and maintain public education in and appreciation of the art and science of music in all its aspects by the presentation of public concerts and recitals, by commissioning new choral works and by such other ways as the Club through its Committee decides. This is principally achieved through the activities of the choir which is open to any active singer in and around Aldeburgh, without audition. An annual subscription is charged to cover the costs of weekly rehearsals and to contribute towards the periodic losses incurred in performing public concerts. The Club arranges and performs concerts each year in Aldeburgh and the surrounding district. The programmes include many of the great classical choral works and a wide variety of less well-known works together with concertos and other orchestral works. Wherever appropriate, the Club will employ local orchestras, young professional soloists and instrumentalists from East Anglia. The trustees have had due regard to the Charity Commission �s guidance on public benefit when considering what activities to undertake. ## **Review of the year** The Club�s acti�it ies during the year were severely curtailed by the Covid 19 pandemic. The first and only concert of the year was a performance of Verdi �s Requiem with the Prometheus Orchestra conducted by Edmond Fivet held in November 2019 at Snape Maltings. The deficit on this concert of £3,586 was less than expected due to better ticket sales. Sadly, this turned out to be Edmond Fi�et�s last concert as Music Director of the choir as he had already signalled his intention to retire from the role after the concert planned for May 2020. The choir was at the final stages of preparing for a performance of Bach�s Easter Oratorio and Vi�aldi�s Gloria in March with the Suffolk Baroque Players when rehearsals had to stop because of the increasingly serious health situation in the UK. Subsequently all rehearsals and concerts were cancelled for the rest of 2020. This situation will continue until the trustees consider it is safe to recommence. The trustees are pleased to report that Tom Appleton was appointed as Music Director of the Club �ith effect from � September ����� The Club�s committee together �ith the ne� Music Director have set out a programme of music related talks to take place on-line during the Autumn. The future programme will be kept under review and any future plans will depend on government guidance. The safety of the Club�s members is paramount when considering any future arrangements. ## **Financial review** The accounts of the club are prepared on a receipts and payments basis. The Receipts and Payments Account for the year ended 31 July 2020 shows a surplus of £9,229 (2019 - £5,827). 2 Membership subscriptions including gift aid totalled £14,727 (2019 - £12,910). Patrons contributed £9,724 (2019 - £9,651) including gift aid. These subscriptions and gifts help to fund the choir's rehearsals and concerts. The total deficit on concerts for the year was £9,732. Compensation payments of £4,018 were offered and paid to musicians and soloists booked for the concerts cancelled during 2020. Cash at the year end was £64,212 (2019 - £54,983). All of the expenses relate to charitable activities. In the opinion of the trustees, the Club has sufficient reserves to continue while its activities are limited by the pandemic. ## **Statement of policy on reserves** Concert revenues are subject to many factors outside the control of the trustees. The Club plans the concert schedule up to three years in advance and may enter into financial commitments in relation to those concerts. To enable the Club to do this with confidence, the trustees have a policy to maintain sufficient reserves to be able to cover the anticipated costs of these activities for three seasons after taking into account expected revenue from other sources. Responsibilities and basis of report The charity trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (the Act). I report in respect of my examination of the Charity's accounts carried out under section 145 of the Act and in carrying out my examination. I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 14515)(b} of the Act. Independent examiner's statement I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination which gives me cause to believe that in any material respect: accounting records were not kept in accordance with section 130 of the Act or the accounts do not accord with the accounting records. I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
