ATLA MISSION STATEMENT

OUR VISION: to create a world where lipreading classes are available to all who need them

OUR PURPOSE: to provide a professional and recognised association for teachers of lipreading to adults, and to work in partnership with others to ensure that everyone challenged by hearing loss has access to lipreading classes and appropriate support.

Foreword from the Chair

Welcome to the 2022/2023 annual report; thank you for reading it and keeping up to date with what your committee has been doing in the last year.

Last year, Sally Joyner and Adam Gurney joined the committee, and both have contributed their knowledge and skills to progress the work of ATLA. As announced via E-bulletin, they have now swapped roles to reflect their particular skills and therefore, Sally Joyner is now Training and Events Co-ordinator, and Adam is now overseeing our website development.

We have a new company, TL Martin, looking after our website and we are looking forward to exciting development of the website, classes listing and an informationsharing point so that we can all share lesson material more effectively.

The ATLA Conference in October was a great success, and we will soon be sending out information about this year’s conference.

There are members of ATLA who are not on the committee, but who put in hours and hours of work ‘behind the scenes,’ to keep our work running smoothly. I would like to thank Patricia Sherren who runs the shop; Maggie Short who puts Catchword together twice a year; Anne Orpin, our Classes Officer who works hard to ensure that the information on the website is accurate and Molly Berry and Lisa Cox who oversee ATLA’s Facebook page, finding and posting relevant articles. Please make sure that you ‘like’ our page and any articles to raise our profile. I would also like to welcome Sarah Groves to the team, as Membership Officer, and to thank her for the work she’s done this year. You can thank her best by setting up a Direct Debit to ensure that your membership fee is paid on time each year.

Last year saw the launch of the Promotional Packs which you can borrow when giving talks or attending local events, to make your stand look smart and professional.

If you are interested in enabling ATLA to fulfil its mission of supporting tutors and promoting lipreading, please consider joining the committee. The more people we have, the better we can serve our diverse membership, and the more we can share the tasks out. We’re a supportive, and dare I say, nice, team and we really value the effort that each other makes for ATLA. You can attend some meetings as an observer if you think you might be interested in joining us.

Finally, I’m sure you join me in thanking the committee who give so much time to ensure that ATLA supports you all: Pam Myles, Barbara Hitchins, Susan Simons, Sally Joyner and Adam Gurney.

Achievements of the last year.

ATLA is a membership organisation. Full membership is open to those who have obtained an approved qualification to teach lipreading. It also accepts student members, who have commenced their training; retired members; Honorary Life members; and affiliated membership, open to professional bodies working in allied fields.

There has been a further reduction in membership over the last year. The pandemic has continued to have an impact. For some teachers, the break in classes has prompted them to leave the organisation, and a few have taken the opportunity to retire. Membership numbers for the last year are as follows:

Membership table 2022-23 2022-23 2021-22 (2020-21) (2019-20)
Full members: 151 156 160 170
Retired members: 33 38 34 32
Students: 9 9 14 15
Honorary members: 6 6 6 6
Patrons: 3 3 3 3
Affiliated members: 2 2 2 2
Total membership: 204 214 219 228

This means that over the last 4 years there has been an 11% decrease in the full membership.

There are two aspects to the work of ATLA. The first is the benefit to the wider public, through information provision, and the class listings for the classes that ATLA members teach. Related to this, the second aspect is the support that ATLA offers to its members, to support the provision of lipreading classes. In carrying out this activity, the Trustees have had regard at all times to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission to ensure that all activities have a benefit to the public.

Benefits to the public

The pandemic has had an impact on the number of classes taught by members. Classes are now meeting face to face, but online classes have also continued. Considerable work has gone into gathering information about classes, and updating the website. There are currently 264 classes listed on the website, which is a 6% decrease from the 282 classes listed last year. The table below shows the spread of classes across the UK.

2022 - 2023 2021 - 2022
England 207 219
Northern Ireland 4 4
Scotland 46 50
Wales 4 6
Isle of Man 3 3
Total 264 282

83 classes are taught online, a reduction of 6 from last year. It continues to mean that teachers are offering classes at a range of different times. Previously there were almost no classes meeting in the evening, whereas now, without the travel requirements and the dark nights, there are a number of classes in the evening. In addition, online classes mean that if people cannot find a local class, they may be able to find an online class to join. There is a good mixture of face to face and online classes, to better meet people’s needs.

The other direct benefit that ATLA provides to the public is the website. This provides advice and guidance about hearing loss and lipreading; a search facility for classes; and a shop selling items relating to lipreading. The Trustees completed a review of the website, developed a specification for requirements, and completed a tender process. Progress has been made on developing the new website and it is expected to be online in 2023. ATLA also has a Facebook page, which provides up to date information about issues related to hearing loss. It provides a face to ATLA outside of the lipreading community, and has a regular audience of over 800 people.

The shop sales are still quite slow. This year we introduced Christmas cards and these were very popular. One of the items in most demand is the book ‘Watch This Face’. It is currently out of stock, and ATLA has taken full responsibility for this publication. Updates have been agreed, but it is not yet in a format that can be amended. This is proving challenging, but it is hoped it will be resolved this year.

Benefits to the membership

The second aspect of our work is direct support to lipreading teachers. The quality of lipreading teaching depends on this group of people, and it is the responsibility of the trustees to support the provision of resources to help them. The development of online skills is an important aspect of this, which has enabled the work of the organisation to continue. Committee meetings have continued to be held online. The AGM went ahead in May, online, with 32 members in attendance. The AGM will again be online in 2023, as this is considered the best way to ensure members can attend.

The ATLA Conference in October 2022 was the major event of this year. It was attended by 33 delegates plus stall holders, including the Association of Lipspeakers, CICADA, Hearing Dogs for the Deaf / Hearing Link, Bellman, and Sarabec.

There were presentations by Helen Pryce on the HeLP study, Janice Fisher on ‘Managing Tinnitus’, and Michael Britland from Hearing Link Services. The afternoon was devoted to CPD and ATLA committee business. Members participated in discussions about ATLA’s priorities for the coming year, and what they would like to see in terms of Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

The conference received excellent feedback: ‘Overall excellent, well done,’’ A very productive day,’ ‘Very professional and informative.’ Many attendees appreciated being able to speak to other tutors face-to-face and to network.

Away from the Conference, a lot of useful information has also been shared via Catchword and on the wiki, and in smaller regional gatherings. There was a workshop on using PowerPoint in support of lipreading lessons (thanks to ATLA member Emma Holmes) in November 2022.

A summary of topics for future training and events, and how it might best be delivered, was shared at the 2022 AGM. There was positive feedback from members, which helped to shape the agenda for the conference in October 2022. The feedback will also help to prioritise the training and events that will be arranged in 2023-24.

Communication and information sharing with members continues to be important. ATLA has sent out a regular e-bulletin, with immediately relevant information. The editor of ATLA’s magazine Catchword has ensured its bi-annual publication. There have been 164 pages of lesson material published in Catchword, covering a wide range of topics. It is to the credit of the editor, and the members that they have continued to provide such good examples of lesson content, and ideas on how to deliver it.

ATLA has a wiki, open only to members. This has been a useful forum for seeking and sharing information, and starting discussions. Work has begun on developing a

more user friendly approach, that will support teachers in their teaching. It is expected that changes will take place over the next two years.

A continuing challenge for teachers is promoting their classes to those who might benefit. A promotional pack has been developed, which includes a table top display, and information leaflets. These packs are available for teachers to borrow, to support them in advertising their classes at local events.

Continuation of lipreading teaching

The continuation of lipreading teaching depends on new teachers being trained, and teachers setting up new classes. There is one lipreading teacher training course currently running, in London. Work is ongoing in Scotland to provide a course there. 7 teachers from London qualified in 2022.

To support students, ATLA can offer a bursary towards the costs of the course, and in 2022 - 23 allocated 7 bursaries, an increase of 5 on the previous year. Following qualification, ATLA encourages teachers to set up new classes, and offers grants to enable them to cover their start up costs. 5 grants have been given this year, an increase of 2 on the previous year.

Honorary Treasurer’s Report Financial Year ending 31 January 2023

The final balance of our assets is £73,735 and our current account ended the financial year with £47,775.

We have an overall increase in our asset balance of £22,430. Although we have a reduction in income from ATLA shop sales, this has been offset by very welcome donations amounting to £34,811. The donations include two extremely generous bequests totalling £34,104 from Mary Bayntun and Olive Crockett.

7 bursaries totalling £8,225 and 5 grants amounting to £3,746 have been awarded this year. Only one Lipreading Teacher Training Course (LTTC) is running this academic year, at the City Lit. The LTTC in Scotland hopes to resume soon.

There has been a significant decrease (9%) in membership fees. The amount tends to vary from year to year reflecting the balance of those beginning to teach and those leaving teaching and now paying the reduced retired membership fee or ceasing membership completely.

£685 was spent on promotion and advertising this year. No promotional material was produced specifically for Lipreading Awareness Week.

New ATLA Christmas cards were printed using the wonderful humorous designs kindly donated by artist Janis Mennie. Thank you, Janis.

The costs for the AGM, training days and committee meetings this year were much higher as, in October, we held our first, long-awaited face-to-face Conference and our first face-to-face committee meeting since Covid. Unfortunately, the train strike increased the costs for both.

Our communication (STTR) costs of £2,297 are higher than last year. This is partly due to the Conference and the first, long overdue face-to-face committee meeting.

Website costs were higher this year as we moved to a new service provider. Work is in progress to update and resolve problems with the website. Data Protection costs remained at £35.00 per annum.

The interest earned on our COIF Deposit Accounts has shown a marked improvement.

ATLA would like to thank the team at Derby Community Accountancy Service for examining our accounts under Section 145 of the Charities Act.

Structure, Governance and Management

The Association of Teachers of Lipreading to Adults (ATLA) was registered under the Charities Act in 1990, and is regulated by the Constitution adopted in April 1982, and last amended in September 2020.

Management of the Charity

ATLA is managed and administered by an executive committee, who are the Trustees. The membership of the executive committee consists of a Chair, a Secretary and a Treasurer, with up to eight additional Trustees. The members of the executive committee hold office until the conclusion of the third annual meeting of the charity after their appointment, and can serve on the committee for two consecutive terms of three years.

The quorum for making an effective decision by the executive committee is four voting members or one third of the voting members of the committee, whichever is greater. The committee meets, at a minimum, three times a year, and the meetings may be held electronically. The Treasurer presents a full financial report for review at each meeting. The quorum for making a decision at the Annual General Meeting is 30 voting members, or 10% of the voting membership, whichever is less.

Trustees are nominated for consideration at the Annual General Meeting. Nomination forms, signed by the applicant, are submitted to the Executive Committee for consideration at the Annual General Meeting. In the event of a surplus of applicants, decisions are made by secret ballot, or postal ballot.
